We are looking for a talented Software Development Engineer who will join us on a team that is building large scale, green-field native AWS services, and that also owns a feature-rich Android app that is used by millions of users everyday. Overview

We build the Home screen app — the face of Fire Tablets that millions of Amazon customers worldwide use every day. Our goal is to continue making the Home screen app CX highly engaging, and personalized for the user; and enable new revenue opportunities for Amazon. We take pride in building a functionally rich, content-forward and visually appealing app that exceeds the performance bar customers would expect on a low-budget tablet device. We are a team of engineers who can dive deep into Android, and at the same time build large scale services leveraging native AWS.

Responsibilities

• Define and build innovative consumer product experiences with a direct impact on the design, architecture, and implementation of flagship products that customers love and use every day.
• Take ownership for the long-term quality and success of the products that your team builds and drive continuous improvement in engineering and operational excellence.
• Work with your manager and teammates to clarify requirements, design solutions, and solve difficult software problems.
• Identify appropriate trade-offs and escalate when you realize that a problem is beyond your control.
• Mentor new teammates and help them learn to develop production software in line with Amazon's quality bar.
• Contribute to an on-call rotation every ~1-2 months.

A day in the life

As a Software Engineer on our team, you will independently work with product managers, UX team members, and other engineers within and outside the team to build new end-user facing features available on the Home screen app. You will design, plan and deliver mid-sized software features. You will also learn, employ, and sometimes build tools and techniques to build the most performant yet less resource-intensive and stable mobile apps and AWS services. You will guide junior engineers in coding, and design best practices, to help them become strong engineers.

Basic Qualifications

• Experience (non-internship) in professional software development
• Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
• Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
• Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
• Experience with Android programming
