About Us

Hi there!

We know you've seen many job descriptions. This one might look like the others, but what we’re building, and the role you could play in it, is something we are very excited about.

We are Bihar Batteries, a new-generation battery startup based in San Sebastian. We are building sodium-ion storage systems, a critical technology that gives people, businesses, and communities control over their energy.

Unlike lithium-ion, our sodium-ion technology is made with locally abundant raw materials like salt. This means no critical supply chains, and a hopeful path towards energy independence in Europe.

This technology is at the heart of our product: a modular battery system that can power everything from off-grid mountain refuges to industrial companies and regions.

Here are some highlights of what we’ve achieved so far :

  • We have developed a working sodium battery prototype and proprietary sodium cells.
  • We have partnered with leading industrial companies and research centers to scale up, such as CIC energiGUNE and Battera.
  • We are backed by early stage private investors, and have received two public grants to support our operations.

We believe batteries should not only be reliable, but also well-designed, easy to use, and attractive. This is why we are building a team that can turn these pieces into a product that people will be proud to use.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for an Electronic Engineer to lead the electronics of our battery system. This involves integrating a commercially available Battery Management System into our product, as well as developing new electronic components for specific features of our product.

As one of our first employees, we are looking for a curious and proactive ‘builder’ that is motivated with the challenge of joining an early stage company like Bihar.

We want you to feel that Bihar’s product is your product, and to be part of the company’s growth from a small group of individuals to an organization with international ambition.

What We Need
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, preferably with a Master’s in Power Electronics or Embedded Systems.
  • Deep understanding of Battery Management Systems and ability to test, integrate and modify them, including uC programming.
  • Ability to develop HW electronic components from scratch, including sketching, 3D modeling, prototyping, testing, and iterating.
  • Experience in selecting optimal commercial electric and electronic components.
  • Ability to work fluently in Spanish and English.
  • Based in San Sebastian or willingness to spend significant time in the city (hybrid position).
What You’ll Be Working On
  • Integrating commercial BMSs into Bihar’s storage system.
  • Designing, prototyping, and coordinating the development of new electronic components.
  • Manually putting together battery prototypes, including BMS-cell welding.
  • Collaborating with R&D, product design and manufacturing teams to scale electronics.
  • Managing relationships with suppliers and product manufacturers.
  • Assisting with product management and certification.
  • Hiring and mentoring new teammates as we grow.
What We Offer
  • Hybrid work flexibility, with the chance to combine remote focus time and in-person prototyping in our San Sebastian workspace.
  • A competitive salary adapted to your experience, plus stock options.
  • Brand new equipment both to design as well as to prototype (you choose).
  • A career plan tailored to your experience and ambition.
  • Training & education budget (courses, books, travel to events).
  • Referral bonus for bringing in great people to the team.
  • An annual company offsite with the team to enjoy, talk and discuss company strategy.
Why Join Us?

Purpose

  • Work on cutting-edge sodium-ion battery technology at a time when the world needs sustainable alternatives to lithium. Shape products that will power communities, companies, and outdoor environments across Europe.

Ownership

  • As one of our first hires, your work will determine our product, culture, and company direction. Enjoy early employee benefits like stock options.

Team

  • Build together with a team that has worked with international industry leaders like BYD, Cegasa, Norman Foster, or the MIT. Learn from leading European research and manufacturing partners.

Location

  • Live and work in San Sebastian, one of Europe’s most beautiful and innovative cities. Beaches, surfing, and hiking at your doorstep. World-class gastronomy, cultural events, and a thriving innovation ecosystem in the Basque Country, surrounded by research and industry.

You will hear back from us soon with the following step of the process, and hopefully with an interview to get to know you better!

We welcome you to apply even if you don’t meet 100% of the criteria. At Bihar, we believe skills can be learned, and we strongly value people willing to grow inside the company.

We can’t wait to hear from you : )
