Department Overview

The People’s Farm for Sustainable Agriculture strives to educate the UW community about the relationship between people, land, and food. Through our garden workshops, educational events, and outreach programming, we aim to bring critical awareness about food systems, land use, and sustainability issues at UW.

Must be enrolled as a student at UW-Madison.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

No prior experience is necessary. Strong applicants have previous farm experience, are majoring in a related field, or have knowledge of organic agriculture.

Position Summary / Job Duties

10 hours/week during the school year, 10 hours/week during the summer.

Collaborate with farm directors throughout the year. Farm directors will offer extra support to Urban Agriculture directors during the winter. During summers, Urban Agriculture Directors will offer extra support to Farm directors.

Campus Growing Spaces
  • Research, design, and implement new urban agriculture techniques and practices including but not limited to vertical planting, companion planting, container gardening, hydroponics, vermicompost, aquaponics, and succession planting in small spaces
  • Collaborate with Farm Directors to propagate seeds in greenhouse in March
  • Plan for spring planting during the winter season
  • Grow, harvest, and transport vegetables to weekly harvest handouts
  • Maintain Tower Gardens
Education
  • Serve as a liaison between The People’s Farm and other urban agriculture resources or university organizations
  • Plan and lead at least one 2 hour long public workday during the spring and summer semester
  • Guide and support interns in projects related to urban agriculture
  • Focus an emphasis on reusing salvaged materials in projects
  • Ensure campus growing spaces have educational/explanatory signage
Urban Ag Program
  • Develop ideas for research
  • Create and lead events
  • Organize workshop(s) with programing director

All members of the People’s Farm Board of Directors will support other Directors as requested, including assisting with running programming and events, volunteering on the farm, at other growing spaces, and more. All Directors will participate in Harvest Handouts and other key events essential to the functioning of the organization. All Directors will attend biweekly board meetings, and weekly subgroup meetings and office hours, as well as triannual Mission & Vision sessions, and participate in quarterly peer evaluations. All Directors will communicate consistently and effectively with the board, and keep detailed records of their tenure.

Physical Demands

Must be comfortable spending time outside in various weather conditions doing manual labor to assist Farm Directors as needed.
