Jobbeschreibung

Future. Discover. Together.

Photonics is one of the most dynamic areas of applied research. Thanks to its many years of technological experience, Fraunhofer HHI is a global leader in integrated optoelectronic components. In addition to optical data transmission, our technologies are becoming increasingly important in sensor technology, analytics, quantum communication, and quantum information processing. The dynamic nature of the field enables exciting scientific projects with clear application prospects. We are working on the challenges of hybrid integration of photonic functionalities based on modern material systems such as polymers, silicon nitride, and lithium niobate. The range of applications for our chips extends from classic data transmission to quantum communication, quantum computing, and neural networks. From simulation to design and manufacturing to metrological characterization, we cover all stages of development for innovative integrated optical components. Become a part of our team and join us on our journey of research and innovation!

Be part of change
  • Development, design, and modeling of integrated photonic components for quantum technologies, communication, and sensor technology, in particular based on the hybrid integration of nonlinear crystals on photonic integrated circuits
  • Support and development of the manufacturing and assembly steps for photonic components, from wafer production and the assembly of subassemblies to ready‑to‑use modules
  • Supervision of the metrological characterization of components
  • Further development and supervision of our measuring stations
  • Acquisition and implementation of development projects with industrial partners – nationally and internationally
  • Presentation and publication of work at international conferences, trade fairs, and platforms

Scientific work offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.

What you contribute
  • University degree (master's) in physics, electrical engineering, or related fields, completed with honors
  • In‑depth knowledge of photonic device design and simulation and experience with common simulation, design, and CAD tools
  • Several years of experience in the processing of photonic integrated components in a clean room environment, preferably in the processing of components in silicon photonics and 3D integration technologies (vertical 3D silicon waveguides)
  • In‑depth knowledge of the characterization of photonic components
  • Professional experience in project acquisition and project management
  • Experience in scientific publication
  • Interest in the development of technology, assembly and measurement technology

Additionally, we would be delighted if you have excellent German and English language skills, are a team player, have analytical thinking skills, are highly motivated and proactive, and can work independently.

What we offer
  • Fascinating challenges in a scientific and entrepreneurial setting
  • Attractive salary package according to TVöD with 30 vacation days, pension scheme (VBL), wealth creation benefits (VWL)
  • Modern and excellently equipped workspace in a central location
  • Great and cooperative working atmosphere in an international team
  • Flexible working hours
  • Support if you wish to do a doctorate
  • Opportunities to work from home
  • Extensive training, health and sports offers
  • Various employee discounts and discounted BVG ticket
  • Offers for families (parent‑child office, emergency care, leisure activities, etc.)

The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is explicitly desired.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part‑time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilisation of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
