Job description

Position Summary

The Master is the first in command of the vessel and is responsible for all shipboard and portside operations. The Master serves as the supervisor of shipboard personnel and ensures crew compliance with regulatory and MMTL policy.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Ensuring the safe and efficient loading and unloading of product from the vessel (docking and discharge).
  2. Ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of goods to pre-designed destinations (maneuvering, operation of Navigational and radio equipment, steering, Ballast water management, navigation of rivers, and line-handling operations, crew management).
  3. Managing all shipboard operations.
  4. Implementing Safety Management System on board the vessel. Supervising and conducting safety activities including drills and meetings.
  5. Directing the crew in emergency situations to protect safety, the environment, and Company assets.
  6. Maintaining vessel compliance with applicable regulations by Transport Canada and/or local authorities.
  7. Investigating incidents involving crew injuries, environmental pollution, and damage to Company assets to the highest standard.
  8. Exhibiting exemplary leadership behavior.
  9. Possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master Mariner license (subject to variance in vessel's safe manning documents).
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training for basic safety, survival craft, rescue boats, and advanced firefighting.
  • MED certification for senior officers.
  • SEN II ECDIS Generic.
  • Marine Medical certification.
  • Specialized Oil Tanker Training certificate of proficiency with Transport Canada Level 2 Endorsement.
  • General Operators Certificate.
  • Bridge Resource Management training.
  • Certificate of Proficiency as a Ship Security Officer.
  • Valid Passport and Marine Medical.
  • Thorough understanding and experience with marine industry regulations including ISM code.
  • Experience as a Captain of a tanker vessel ≥3000 GRT or similar-sized vessel as a First Mate.
  • Pilotage Certificates PM2 for Cornwall District, District 1 LO, District 2.
  • Tanker experience.
  • Experience in carriage of Bitumen Asphalt is an asset.
  • Dual Fuel LNG training as per IGF Code (Advanced).
  • Eligibility to enter the US.
