OverviewEmployee must support the mission of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines and the vision of the Laboratory by demonstrating a strong commitment to Personal and Service Excellence and CORE Values. Under the leadership of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position delivers clinical and non-clinical services to support patient-centered care. The phlebotomist is responsible for timely, accurate, and efficient blood specimen collection, contributing directly to patient care and experience. Laboratory data from blood specimens are used extensively for diagnostic and treatment purposes.

ResponsibilitiesObtains adequate blood specimens from all patient groups, including inpatients (obstetric, medical/surgical, mental health, oncology, rehabilitation, renal, neurological), outpatients, emergency care, and non-patient services (physician clinics, wellness/fitness, environmental monitoring, pediatric). Labels all specimens according to standards. Supports LEAN principles of one-piece flow and first-in-first-out when delivering samples to the laboratory. Adheres to standard work processes and meets productivity standards. Exercises judgment to determine work priorities. Interacts with nursing units and clients to clarify critical priorities and verify discrepancies, including judging specimen acceptability and canceling tests as needed. Implements continuous quality improvement by exemplifying professionalism, compassion, and cooperation, providing excellent customer service.
QualificationsEDUCATION: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. Preferred: Successful completion of a phlebotomy course. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: Not required. EOE M/F/V/D
