MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLOR

Responsibilities include the provision of assessment; individual, and group counselling; referral, and case management services. Non-clinical responsibilities include participation in public relations activities; collaboration with other agencies and groups in the planning and delivery of mental health-related community and professional education and prevention services; participation on interagency committees; and other activities which promote service coordination.

Key Duties – Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive in-person psychosocial assessments which address personal, social, family, and employment adjustments, psychological functioning, strengths, and impairments and the various factors (social/psychological, medical and environmental) contributing to presenting problems
  • Formulate treatment plans using internal and external consultation as appropriate
  • Provide treatment services using various therapeutic modalities; including individual, or group therapy
  • Refer/provide/coordinate follow‑up or adjunct services as required
  • Provide case management and involve/establish formal and informal support systems where necessary and appropriate
  • Provide case consultations
  • Participate in case conferences and other service planning and coordination activities on behalf of the client
  • Provide advocacy at the client, program and system level as required
  • Collect client and program statistical data as required
  • Maintain written case records according to program and organizational standards
  • Actively participate in clinical supervision, professional development, and ongoing self‑assessment aimed at developing/enhancing professional and clinical knowledge and skills
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, (i.e. audits) and program reviews
  • Participate in developing new treatment strategies and services to meet client and community needs
  • Consult and collaborate with other agencies and community groups in identifying mental health education needs
  • Participate as a resource person in planning and delivery of educational events and activities for local health and human service providers and for the general public
  • Develop and maintain effective referral, liaison, and working relationships with local community program and with key collaterals

Hours of work are 15 per week. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break. Working in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

What you will bring

  • Master’s Degree in Applied Health or Social Sciences majoring in clinical studies
  • Current registration with one of the professional colleges listed (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Nurses of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, College of Psychologists of Ontario)
  • Minimum three (3) years recent and relevant clinical experience in mental health counselling for adults with serious mental illness and those with acute problems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound judgement, particularly with respect to high risk or sensitive situations
  • Maturity and ability to work well under pressure
  • An understanding and appreciation of rural communities
  • Strong team skills and ability to work well with peers, colleagues from other agencies, and with various consumer, stakeholder and professional groups
  • Advanced clinical skills and knowledge of relevant best practice guidelines
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, DSM V diagnoses and pharmacology
  • Understanding of mental illness and the Recovery Model
  • Advanced proficiency in use of cognitive behaviour therapy, brief solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing
  • Understanding and appreciation of Concurrent Disorders
  • Solid judgement, problem‑solving and communication skills
  • Strong team skills and ability to work well with community and professional groups
  • Maturity, a good sense of humour and the ability to work well under pressure
  • An understanding and appreciation of rural communities
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
  • Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
  • A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
