Position Summary

Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication to delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at the University Hospital of Northern BC.

In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as well as within a patient and family-centered care model.

The Registered Nurse practices in a variety of clinical settings and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of client care. Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse ensures the delivery of client-centered care by assisting individual clients and their families to respond to changing healthcare needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Days, Nights, 07:00 to 19:00, 19:00 to 07:00 (rotating)

University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest Acute Care facility within the Northern Health region, and a hub for specialized health services. It's also a teaching hospital:

  • Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia.
  • Hosts residents in UBC's Family Practice Residency Program
  • Is a key clinical education site for nursing and many health sciences students at UNBC, the College of New Caledonia, BCIT and other institutions.

UHNBC has benefited from nearly $100 million in expansions, renovations, and new equipment since 2001:

  • Patient care addition with an expanded emergency room and updated ICU
  • State-of-the-art maternal-child care center (including a single room neonatal ICU)
  • Facilities to accommodate undergraduate physician training
  • MRI unit

UHNBC is also home to a cancer center for Northern BC, featuring a wide range of cancer treatments including radiation therapy.

Qualifications

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Advanced preparation in Critical Care, one-year recent related clinical experience in the assigned practice environment (such as CSICU, CICU, Cardiac Diagnostic Procedures or Cardiac Cath Lab), and as required by the practice environment successful completion of the Northern Health Cardiac Course, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate/ prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and the members of the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written, and computer communication means.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively.
  • Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitive to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy, and social justice concerns.
  • Ability to transmit information intended to instruct clients and others about topics essential to health care and well-being.
  • Manages time and resources, implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines, and related activities.
  • Promotes staff morale, cooperation, assertiveness, and risk-taking, creative planning for change and innovations, implementation of policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self.
  • Using factual information, prior learning, and basic principles and procedures to support decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence. Integrates best practices from nursing and health-related disciplines and the humanities, arts, and sciences disciplines into professional practice.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
