Position Description

Location: Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC

Clearbrook MB has existed since 1936, founded to serve Mennonite Brethren immigrants in the area. Over time the congregation grew beyond its original ethnic roots to include people from varied communities and denominational backgrounds.

The church maintains a strong commitment to “glorifying God and sharing God’s love,” expressed through worship, music, intercessory prayer, care ministry, support for seniors, local charitable outreach, missions, and broadcasting services for those unable to attend in person (via their TV station and online).

Clearbrook MB values: caring for seniors, intercessory prayer, community, welcoming newcomers, traditional yet vibrant worship including choral and instrumental music, and cross-cultural outreach.

Because of these characteristics, the Care Ministry at Clearbrook MB is central: many members are seniors or otherwise benefit from pastoral care, community support, and outreach.

The Pastor of Care Ministries will provide pastoral care, compassion‑led support, and oversight of all aspects of care ministries — both within the congregation (members, seniors, shut‑ins, families) and in the broader community (local charities, agencies, outreach). This person will ensure that “sharing God’s love” translates into tangible support, emotional and spiritual care, and community connection.

• Provide pastoral care to church members: visitation, counselling, prayer support, follow‑up for those who are sick, shut‑in, elderly, grieving, or otherwise in need.
• Oversee and coordinate the church’s Care Ministries: support for seniors, shut‑ins or home‑bound individuals, families in crisis, bereavement support, referrals to community agencies as needed.
• Organize and collaborate with volunteers and lay‑persons (small‑group leaders, prayer teams, fellowship groups) to deliver care and support.
• Ensure effective communication and coordination with other ministries of the church: worship/music ministry, cross‑cultural ministries, local community outreach, media (for example, arranging online or TV broadcasts for shut‑ins or isolated members).
• Engage in intercessory prayer and spiritual leadership — being a pastoral presence, committed to Scripture and prayer, providing spiritual comfort and guidance.
• Build relationships not only within the older congregation but also with younger families and cross‑cultural members, as the church continues to embrace diversity.
• Facilitate community outreach and partnerships: liaise with local charities and community‑service agencies (e.g., food banks, social‑support organizations, agencies that serve seniors) — helping the church live out its mission beyond its own walls.
• Help integrate newcomers and visitors into the church family: offering hospitality, welcoming, encouragement, connecting them to care resources, small groups, or ministries.
• Collaborate with pastoral staff and leadership (elders, pastors, volunteers) to develop care strategies for long‑term needs (e.g., elder care, chronic illness, family crises, community outreach), ensuring sustainability, confidentiality, and compassion.
• Contribute to regular church operations: attend staff meetings, maintain confidentiality, adhere to church values and doctrine, and support the overall mission & vision of Clearbrook MB.

• Strong biblical/theological grounding. A degree in theology/divinity, or equivalent ministry training, or significant relevant pastoral‑care experience (preferably in an Anabaptist/Mennonite Brethren context) — or willingness to learn and uphold those values.
• Demonstrated compassion, empathy, and pastoral maturity: able to walk with people in suffering, grief, loneliness, aging, and crisis with sensitivity, discretion, and spiritual depth.
• Excellent interpersonal and relational skills— able to relate to a diverse congregation: seniors, families, cross‑cultural individuals, newcomers, long‑term members, shut‑ins, volunteers.
• Leadership and organizational capacity to coordinate care ministries and volunteer teams, manage outreach partnerships, plan care initiatives, and follow through.
• Strong communication skills— pastoral counselling, phone visits, home visits, collaboration with other pastors/ministries, and ability to communicate compassionately and clearly.
• A commitment to intercessory prayer and spiritual care— seeing care ministry as spiritual ministry, not just social work.
• Flexibility and cultural sensitivity— Clearbrook MB has a history of serving people from different ethnic and denominational backgrounds.
• Ability to work collaboratively with the rest of the pastoral team, staff, and volunteers.
• Integrity, confidentiality, commitment to church mission and values (“glorifying God, building the church, reaching the world”).

• The Care Ministry Leader will report to the pastoral leadership/team of Clearbrook MB Church, in collaboration with all pastors.
• Should ensure regular reporting on care‑ministry activities, needs assessments, volunteer coordination, and outreach efforts, so as to maintain accountability and integrate care ministry with overall church life.
• Commitment to uphold the doctrine and values of Clearbrook MB Church, including its Mennonite Brethren heritage, evangelistic and community outreach focus.

• Strong heritage and tradition, but with an aspiration to be increasingly diverse in background and age — offering opportunity to bridge generations and cultural backgrounds in care ministry.
• A significant number of seniors, retirees, and potentially shut‑ins — which means care ministry is not peripheral but a core ministry essential to the well‑being of many members.
• A church with both traditional worship (music, choral, instrumental) and modern outreach methods (media/TV/online), giving scope for innovative care delivery (e.g., broadcasting, remote visitation, hybrid care for those unable to attend in person).
• The church’s history of community involvement, cross‑cultural outreach, and social support suggests a calling beyond internal care — toward caring for the broader Abbotsford community.

Salary: $70,000–$85,000 (for full‑time), commensurate with education and experience.
