Overview
We are seeking an energetic, safety-focused, and personable Whitewater Raft Guide to lead guests on river trips ranging from beginner-friendly floats to challenging whitewater runs. The ideal candidate is an experienced paddler with strong leadership skills, excellent communication, and a passion for the outdoors.
Responsibilities
- Safely guide commercial rafting trips on Class I–IV rivers, depending on certification and company requirements.
- Deliver thorough pre-trip safety briefings, including paddling techniques, emergency procedures, and river etiquette.
- Operate rafts, paddles, and gear in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Conduct ongoing risk assessments based on river conditions, weather, and group ability.
- Assist guests with gear fitting (e.g., PFDs, helmets, wetsuits) and ensure proper use.
- Provide engaging, informative, and enjoyable interpretation of the river, local environment, and wildlife.
- Manage group dynamics, maintain positive guest interactions, and handle difficult situations calmly.
- Perform river rescue techniques if necessary.
- Load, unload, clean, and maintain equipment, including rafts, paddles, throw bags, and vehicles.
- Participate in guide meetings, training sessions, and certifications.
- Uphold all federal, state, and company safety regulations.
Qualifications
- Prior whitewater experience in paddle-guiding or oar-rig guiding (requirements vary by river).
- Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SRT) certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- First Aid/CPR certification required; Wilderness First Responder (WFR) a plus.
- Strong swimming ability; comfortable in fast-moving water and adverse conditions.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude and ability to work long hours in a variety of weather conditions.
- Customer-service oriented with strong leadership and situational awareness.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor, physically demanding environment with variable weather and water conditions.
- Weekend, holiday, and peak-season availability required.
- Early mornings and long days expected during high season.
