Job Description
Position Summary
Responsible for maintaining contracted assets (roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels, vegetation, etc.) per standards and conditions specified in the contract as directed by the Patrol Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Performing duties of shift supervisor during the winter maintenance season.
- Assisting supervisor in organizing/planning daily/weekly work, as directed.
- Organizing work activities by arranging appropriate equipment, material and labor.
- Overseeing work operations to ensure value for money and compliance with safety requirements, standards, policies and procedures.
- Providing leadership and training to junior Ferrovial Services staff, including safety instructions, methods and procedures.
- Inspecting work performed by contract staff for compliance to standards and contractual agreements; advising contractors of deficiencies and reporting performance to supervisor.
- Advising supervisor on work performance, training, planning and traffic control at work sites.
Administrative Activities
- Completing, reviewing and maintaining records related to equipment operation, maintenance hours, and material usage (e.g., MMIS, daily inspection books, equipment time sheets, expense forms and reports on sand and salt usage, vehicle accidents, personal injury, etc.).
- Assisting in preparing and monitoring weekly, monthly and annual work plans.
- Providing information for analysis of contractor or public claims.
- Liaising with property owners, the public and organizations such as police, municipal and other Ontario Government Ministries, and utility companies to maintain good public relations and ensure compliance with requirements.
- Occasional operation of patrol equipment when necessary for efficient operations.
- Occasional performance of laboring tasks when necessary for patrol operations.
Related Duties
- Acting for supervisor during absences.
- Compiling highway and road inventory information (e.g., number of entrances, bridges, kilometers of road, mowable hectares).
- Investigating, reporting on and resolving complaints from the public and others.
- Patrolling assigned roads and reporting hazards or deficiencies.
- Initiating contract staff call-outs and administering hired equipment tenders.
- Responding on behalf of the Ministry and Ferrovial Services in emergencies (accidents, spills, weather, etc.).
- Other duties as assigned and compliance with applicable laws and company policies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of summer and winter maintenance operations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of maintenance contracts and Microsoft Office; good verbal and written communication skills for reports and recommendations.
- Ability to prepare and maintain neat, accurate records.
- Strong investigative/analytical skills to research claims, analyze data and assess validity while remaining objective.
- Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, database, email and scheduling software.
- Work performed within ministry and Ferrovial Services policies and procedures with minimal supervision; ability to adapt during rapidly changing winter conditions.
- Strong safety awareness and the ability to recognize hazards and adjust work methods to avoid loss or injury.
- Ability to communicate safety instructions to co-workers and maintain focus on safety in all tasks.
- Willingness to wear PPE appropriate to the job.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma (Required).
- Minimum three (3) years' experience in construction, road maintenance, repair, maintenance or landscaping (outdoor work) (Preferred).
- Must maintain a valid Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License and MTO Operator's Permit, and have an acceptable driving record.
Work Conditions / Physical Demands
- Exposure to outside weather conditions, extreme heat and cold; may encounter wet/humid conditions, high places, fumes, airborne particles and chemicals; noise levels may be moderate to high.
