Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $92,320 - $115,400 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Water Technologist - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Water Technologist to join our talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications Branch. As a Water Technologist, you will work in a multi-disciplinary team in support and promotion of the conservation and management of surface water, including the wise allocation and use of water for oil and gas activities, through review and evaluation of applications and submissions under the Water Act (WA).

This role is recognized within the organization as knowledgeable in surface water resource management for oil and gas activities including related policies, regulations, analytical approaches, risk assessment and stakeholder collaboration.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Coordinates, applies risk based technical review principles, and makes recommendations within target timelines, on WA applications. This includes drafting approvals with case-specific conditions that implement applicable policies, regional plans and water management frameworks.
  • Liaise with representatives from industry, AER field staff and subject matter experts, the public and government during the application review process, providing support across various teams on surface water related reviews as required, and educating applicants on requirements.
  • Represent the AER on internal and external forums to support policy and directive development, contribute to new regulatory frameworks, and advance innovative approaches that uphold environmental regulatory integrity.
  • Conduct desktop surveillance, audits, occasional site visits, and review of annual reports, water use reporting, and submissions to ensure appropriate risk-based compliance throughout the life cycle of oil and gas activities.
  • Support the consideration of statements of concern, appeal and hearing processes, including Alternative Dispute Resolution process. This may include direct support to a hearing panel during the information gathering phase, participation in the hearing process, and decision report writing.
  • Support information, action and media requests by gathering all necessary facility and environmental information and presenting it clearly and concisely.
What we’re looking for in you:
  • University Degree or Technical Diploma in a science, engineering, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of related experience with a focus on surface water. Direct regulatory experience considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework for water allocation and use and how to apply those requirements to various application scenarios
  • Critical thinking ability to think beyond the information presented and to use a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and provide solutions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to multitask and manage high workload and deadlines

  • Occasional overnight travel to visit oil and gas sites in different regions of Alberta may be required.
