Overview
Underwriting Consultant, Life & Living Benefits at Co-operators. The role involves risk assessment of individual life, critical illness and medical disability lines. The position acts as a senior resource for the team and field, guiding others and updating information as required.
Responsibilities
- Assess complex applications and policy changes in individual life & health product lines with multiple risks and various interactions (e.g., medical, financial, occupation, avocation, aviation, global travel, lifestyle, legal aspects such as beneficiary wordings, business insurance, ownership, policy amendments).
- Understand and determine reinsurance impact on risk and the need to refer cases to a higher authority.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of clients’ personal medical history, financial status, and related information.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and professional communication with clients, agency force, medical vendors, reinsurers, and physicians.
- Provide underwriting opinions on life and living benefit claims.
- Second-check senior underwriter decisions when cases exceed release limits.
- Assist in auditing junior underwriters’ cases with Senior Underwriting Consultants and / or Manager.
- Act as back-up for Senior Underwriting Consultants as dictated by volumes of escalated cases or projects.

To Join Our Team
- Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience.
- Five years of related work experience.
- A Business Administration or Health-related Diploma / Degree is beneficial.
- Completion of FLMI or FALU designation, or actively working toward completion.
- Excellent knowledge of complex life insurance and health products.
- Proven decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a high-volume, rapidly changing environment.
- Role primarily works with non-Francophone groups, and teams outside Québec; proficiency in English required. Essential non-French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Salary
- Expected Salary Range : $71,070 $118,450. The final salary is determined by Co-operators based on factors including location, knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education.
