Job description

SAIT’s Athletic and Recreation department plays a vital role in the SAIT experience, supporting Trojans athletes across various sports from hockey to golf. The department offers programs and facilities aimed at promoting active and healthy lifestyles for students, staff, alumni, and the public.

The Opportunity

SAIT’s Athletics and Recreation department is hiring Trojans Assistant Coaches, Equipment Managers, and Team Manager(s). These roles contribute to student engagement and the broader SAIT experience through participation in 15 sports disciplines. We are looking for individuals who are driven to compete and also value mentorship. Please include in your cover letter the sport you are interested in, whether for the Men’s or Women’s team, and the position you wish to apply for.

Current open positions include:

• Men’s Hockey – Equipment Manager

• Men’s Soccer/Futsal – Team Manager

• Badminton – Assistant Coach

• Golf – Assistant Coach

• Curling – Assistant Coach

The Role

  1. Lead and supervise the team during games, practices, trips, meetings, and activities.
  2. Assist in developing practice plans with fellow coaches.
  3. Establish team rules and oversee strategic gameplay elements.
  4. Prepare for games and communicate with the team.
  5. Manage player recruitment, evaluation, and selection processes.
  6. Support team operations for home and away games, tournaments, and outreach events.
  7. Contribute to season planning, including practices and game strategies.
  8. Organize team activities and advocate for Safe Sport, Return to Play, and other professional standards.
  9. Participate in coaches meetings and alumni events as required.
  10. Communicate promptly and respectfully via email or text.
  11. Manage inventory, equipment purchases, and financial reconciliations.

Additional duties for Assistant Coaches & Team Managers:

  • Establish protocols for media, advocacy, and roster management.
  • Coordinate training, certifications, and communication efforts.
  • Maintain registries, databases, and archives.
  • Manage social media, event logistics, and sport promotion.
  • Record statistics, milestones, and celebrations.
  • Support tournament and championship logistics.
  • Update the team website and support sport advocacy.
  • Prepare reports, stories, and event summaries.
  • Be available evenings and weekends, including on-call duties.
  • Attend relevant meetings and events.
  • Create content and supervise students to foster job readiness.
  • Travel as needed for conference championships.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant sport background in playing, coaching, or evaluating.
  • Commitment to athlete development and availability to meet time requirements.
  • Ability to collaborate with staff and communicate effectively.
  • NCCP certification or equivalent, along with Respect in Sport Training and background checks.

Team Manager Qualifications

  • Experience in sport media and logistics.
  • Commitment to student development and team support.
  • Professional certifications, Respect in Sport Training, and background checks.
