Overview

The Student Wellness Hub provides a range of health services to McGill students with a focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention. The Hub has clinicians offering one-on-one appointments, therapy groups, and other services. Within the Hub, the Healthy Living Annex focuses on health promotion and offers peer support programs for both the Macdonald and downtown campuses.

Position Summary

Therapists at the Wellness Hub work as part of an interprofessional team to support student health and wellbeing. Working from a stepped care model, they connect students to campus and community services that support mental health needs. They provide short-term, goal-directed, episodic counselling and psychotherapy to students who would benefit from this level of care, and facilitate psychoeducational workshops and group therapy for students.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Working from a Stepped Care model, conducts (psychological/emotional) assessments and collaboratively creates wellness plans with students. Utilizes existing low-intensity programs such as online therapeutic interventions and self-help materials, workshops, and group therapy. Completes consultation paperwork. Provides follow-up appointments and makes referrals within McGill and the larger community, as appropriate.
  • Provides individual therapy or counselling within the Stepped Care framework for students experiencing severe to mild psychological distress. Works from a short-term, directive, collaborative, evidence-informed model and utilizes strength/resiliency-based modalities. Makes external referrals, as appropriate and required.
  • Conducts group counselling, workshops, and outreach to support the Wellness Hub’s mandate and function of treatment and prevention.
  • Meets with students in crisis and conducts crisis counselling.
  • Keeps clinical records up to date and in line with licensing body standards. Completes paperwork that accompanies clinical interventions.
  • Maintains professional licensure. Ensures that practice is up to date and informed by current research. Participates in training opportunities and incorporates current Counselling Services practices into daily routine. Works on special projects, as assigned.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
  • Ph.D., preferred.
  • Must have appropriate Quebec licensure to provide psychotherapy and treat a psychological disorder (i.e., permit to practice psychotherapy).
  • Demonstrated ability to make clinical decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated competence working with young adults and able to support students from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience.
  • Professionalism, good organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must be able to contribute actively to a team.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a Microsoft environment using Word, PowerPoint, internet search engines and email.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 (fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
