Team Lead - Underwriting Operations

Toronto, ON

We are seeking a high-energy, experienced Insurance Operations Team Lead to lead a group of Underwriting Assistants toward excellence. In this role, the team lead will manage workflows, mentor staff, and drive operational efficiency. The Team Lead ensures the team achieves service delivery, timeliness, productivity, and quality goals, identifies regulatory compliance issues, coaches staff, promotes teamwork, and collaborates with underwriters that the unit supports.

What you’ll be doing
  • Manage a team of Underwriting assistants, perform performance evaluations, recommend salary adjustments, and coach and mentor staff.
  • Establish stakeholder relationships and set the tone for positive collaboration.
  • Oversee development, training and cross‑training of employees.
  • Provide direction to staff in day‑to‑day operations and maintain accountability.
  • Onboard Operations staff.
  • Ensure compliance with predetermined workflows and procedures.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with service standards.
  • Track and report weekly/monthly production.
  • Keep Department Management informed of status and progress of the business units.
  • Coordinate schedule for sick and vacation time for the department; effectively manage backup staff as needed.
  • Schedule and obtain approval for overtime.
  • Plan and organize to establish courses of action for self and others to ensure efficient work completion.
  • Ensure compliance of the unit with Internal Audit, Peer Reviews and audits.
  • Assist with developing appropriate responses and action plans in response to internal and external audit findings.
  • Translate Quality, Timeliness, Productivity and Service Delivery requirements into individual, team and unit performance goals, recommend how and when performance measurements will be done and how to collect performance data.
  • May be asked to support IT development efforts.
  • Maintain open communication with unit managers, and underwriters that the unit supports to foster partnership and teamwork.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership team.
What you will bring

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

Required Skills and Abilities
  • University degree or equivalent experience with advanced insurance knowledge preferred.
  • Experience in P&C insurance business.
  • Advanced knowledge in insurance jargon.
  • Skilled with MS Office desktop software and use of AI.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements such as Bill 96 and Limitation of Liability, among others.
  • Proactive, independent worker with robust time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Positive can‑do attitude is a must and be able to handle multiple priorities and work with limited direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of multinational solutions.
  • Team player.

The Canada base salary range for this position is CAD 79,800 to 113,600. Actual pay will be determined based on the individual’s skills, experience and location. We strive for market alignment and internal equity with our colleagues’ pay.
