POSITION TYPE CASUAL (7 am – 3 pm/3 pm – 11 pm)

Background:The Support Mentor works as part of the Amoowigamig team to support individuals utilizing Amoowigamig. Amoowigamig staff will support residents accessing the washroom facility. The scope of onsite support includes a baseline of resource referrals, distribution of harm reduction supplies, ensuring safe access to the washroom facility, onsite crisis management, and building relationships and community. The incumbent will act in accordance with the Ma Mawi Code of Honor and Amoowigamig service philosophy of providing harm reduction trauma-informed support and services to our relatives who are living unsheltered. They will encourage folks residing in the area to promote safety, ownership, and understanding regarding the importance of community.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12, related experience in working with individuals living unsheltered.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills in developing effective working relationships with folks living unsheltered and the service community.
  • Understands the issues facing individuals at risk and the impact of trauma.
  • Knowledge of the importance of attachment individuals to their community and maintaining their connections to family and community.
  • Supports Indigenous values; knows Indigenous cultures and community issues.
  • Demonstrates skill in problem-solving, particularly during high-stress situations.
  • Possesses a strong working knowledge of community resources.
  • Communicates effectively in oral and written form, including strong documentation skills; the ability to organize a busy schedule, follow through on all tasks assigned, and meet deadlines.
  • Projects an overall positive/respectful approach with all people.
  • Ensures ability to be flexible to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Possesses a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and contribute as a team member.
  • Experience in working with community-based agencies from a community development perspective.
  • Current criminal record check and child abuse registry check; all employees will be subject to a prior contact check.
  • Current First Aid/ CPR and NVCI certificates.
