Job Details

The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. This is a supply, on‑call position; hours are not guaranteed and could range from 0 to 40 hours per week. It is an afternoon shift approximately 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday‑Friday during the school year, with possible alternate hours during holidays and summer clean‑up.

Under the direction of the Custodial Area Supervisor and Lead Custodian, the role maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary school environment by cleaning assigned areas, operating HVAC and energy systems, performing minor maintenance, organizing equipment, and completing seasonal tasks as needed.

Major Duties
1. Clean Assigned Areas
  • Washrooms, showers and change–room areas: clean with disinfectants, replenish paper products, and maintain sanitary supplies.
  • Halls and stairs: sweep, dust mop, and spot‑wet mop floors as scheduled.
  • Classrooms: tidy, reposition furniture, vacuum carpets, dust ledges, disinfect desks, and spot‑clean walls and doors.
  • Floor maintenance: strip, clean, seal, wax, and buff floor surfaces.
  • General: dust blinds, wash windows, tidy, wipe, and spot‑clean fixtures as required.
  • Garbage: empty and dispose of all waste.
  • After work: set heating controls for minimum energy use, turn off lights, lock windows and doors, and test alarms.
  • Equipment room: clean and store equipment, solvents, and chemicals properly.
2. Monitor and Adjust Building Equipment
  • Adjust heating, ventilation, cooling, and related equipment to accommodate evening use and conserve energy.
3. Perform Minor Maintenance
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Minor repairs to desks, chairs, tables, hinges, lockers, electrical cords, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Disassemble and clean exhaust fans, air filters, grease motors, and drain air compressors.
  • Assemble shelving units.
4. Perform Seasonal and Periodic Duties
  • Summer: clean all desks and furniture, refinish floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets, wash blinds, windows, and walls.
  • Winter: clear, shovel, and salt parking areas, walkways, and entrances.
  • Yard work: cut grass, weed, maintain flower beds, trim trees and shrubs, and collect litter.
  • Supplies and furniture: assist with unloading trucks, delivery, set‑up, and arrangement.
  • Special events: set up and remove chairs and tables.
5. Assist Lead Custodian/Group Leader, the Principal, Staff, and After‑Hour Users
  • Notify the supervisor of areas needing attention (e.g., leaks, equipment problems).
  • Assist with unexpected or emergency situations.
  • Monitor after‑hour users of the facility.
  • Present a positive image and respond courteously to inquiries.
6. Other Duties as Assigned

Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Equipment Used

Floor cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, mops, scrubbers, buffers, polishing machines), hand tools, power tools, snow blower, lawn mower, rake, and computer/printer.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 diploma.
  • 6–12 months of training.
Additional Requirements

Provide a current Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
