Job Summary:

The Economic Development and Culture (EDC) Division at the City of Toronto works to advance Toronto's prosperity, opportunity and liveability by fostering employment and investment opportunities, encouraging cultural vibrancy through enhanced cultural experiences, and engaging partners in planning and developing economic and cultural resources.

EDC's Museum & Heritage Services section operates 10 historic sites - including Toronto's Fort York National Historic Site and Spadina Museum - that collectively tell the story of Toronto.

Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Supervisor of Exhibitions and Outreach leads, and manages the City's Fine Art Collection and represents an essential managerial role overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of Exhibitions and Outreach within the Museum and Heritage Services Unit of Economic Development and Culture.

Major Responsibilities:
  • In consultation with management team, develops and implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements. Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operation of all assigned staff including the scheduling, assigning and reviewing of work. Authorises and coordinates vacation and overtime requests. Monitors and evaluates staff performance, approves salary increments, hears grievances and recommends disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations.
  • Develops and manages the delivery of cultural and exhibition programmes within existing policy and procedures and in response to community needs.
  • Working closely with management team and community stakeholders, develops exhibition themes, researches, recommends and selects works for display from the City's collection, other public and private collections.
  • Supervises and provides input in the delivery of education programming in keeping with provincial curriculum requirements and community needs.
  • Liaises with facilities management to determine maintenance needs, approaches and delivery of maintenance services. Ensures the appropriate environmental and security systems are in order.
  • Evaluates the work of professional and technical staff involved in researching and preparing exhibits for public spaces or on the internet.
  • Ensures that rules and policies regarding security and safety and visitors conduct on workspaces and exhibition sites are adhered to. Also ensures Health and Safety policies and procedures are addressed and adhered as required including regular inspections and follow‑up.
  • Co‑ordinates the design and production of printed materials that support and promote exhibitions and educational programming at Museum sites and the City's collection.
  • Directs, researches and supervises the compilation of information for exhibition catalogues and posters, press releases and didactic material.
  • Co‑ordinates and monitors the work of external consultants and service bureaus involved in outreach and marketing activities.
  • Communicates with departments, agencies, boards, commissions, professional colleagues, educators, scholars and the public regarding the nature and scope of outreach and marketing and makes adjustments to service delivery. Identifies and develops opportunities for partnerships with individuals or community‑based organisations to promote the public's appreciation for the importance of cultural heritage.
  • Directs the development, planning and implementation of special events such as walking tours, exhibitions, lectures and receptions in conjunction with special anniversaries.
  • Develops, recommends and implements policies and procedures for the acquisition, care and exhibition of the City's art collection.
  • Selects, negotiates and co‑ordinates acquisitions (purchase, donation and bequest) including appraisals and tax receipts.
  • Administers the City's art collection including professional advice on the art collection, conservation and exhibits to senior managers, staff and other individuals and organisations to ensure appropriate practices are followed.
  • Maintains an inventory of the collection and information concerning artists and donors and ensures that collection records and other relevant data are secured, maintained and developed to meet the legal, administrative and intellectual requirements of the City's art services.
  • Conducts research on the collection. Answers enquiries relating to the collection from the general public, civic staff and professional colleagues at other public institutions.
  • Develops and implements innovative programmes for making the art collection accessible to the public through traditional and new technologies.
  • Co‑ordinates the display of fine art according to City policies. Ensures that security standards are maintained wherever the art collection is placed in order to protect art works from theft, disaster and deterioration caused by poor handling and environmental hazards or other loss and damage.
  • Compiles and reviews attendance statistics for educational programmes, and calendar of events for mailing list. Identifies and develops opportunities for revenue generation based on commercial use of City's fine art collection and facility rentals. Negotiates with private sector organisations to develop partnerships for revenue generation initiatives.
  • Provides technical expertise required in the preparation and installation of exhibitions.
Key Qualifications:
  • Post‑secondary degree or diploma in museology, art history or other closely related discipline or an approved combination of education and museum experience.
  • Extensive experience in working in at least one of the areas of collections management, gallery operations and museum exhibitions.
  • Extensive experience in writing in a variety of formats, including reports, correspondence and exhibit text.
  • Extensive experience in conducting analyses, developing policies, operational plans and procedures, administering program budgets, establishing priorities, developing alternative revenue strategies and achieving planned results.
  • Experience in supervising staff, including day‑to‑day personnel and labour relations issues.
  • Experience working with relevant legislation, particularly the Copyright Act, the Income Tax Act and the Cultural Property Export and Import Act.
  • Experience working with and understanding of information technology, particularly database management and digital photography.
  • Strong knowledge in facility management including maintenance, operational plans and implementing health & safety standards.
  • Ability to represent Museum & Heritage Services with professional credibility among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff, elected officials and the public.
  • Ability to direct and develop staff in a service delivery environment.
  • Ability to develop and sustain partnerships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify and act on revenue‑generating opportunities.
  • General knowledge of government legislation in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety, Employment Standards and Human Rights.
  • Flexibility required for working variable hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
