Substation Technician

Employment Type: Contract

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada

Brief Description: We are seeking skilled Substation Technicians to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

Job Function
  • Installs, maintains, removes and restores (steel, wood, composite or concrete) poles, towers and structures for powerlines;
  • Substation Techs: Strong knowledge of electrical systems, safety procedures, and industry codes (National Electrical Safety Code)
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety protocols and adherence to NETA;
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical power lines (overhead and underground);
  • Inspect and test equipment for safety, reliability, and compliance with industry standards;
  • Respond to emergency situations, including power outages, ensuring quick restoration of service;
  • Perform line switching and conduct system testing and troubleshooting;
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as bucket trucks, power tools, and lineman's tools;
  • Adhere to safety standards and regulations (Occupational Health and Safety, and other industry-specific protocols);
  • Complete and maintain work reports and ensure that proper documentation is filed;
  • Work with electrical engineers to ensure proper design, load calculations, and safety measures;
  • Occasionally work at heights and in harsh weather conditions, particularly during storm events;
  • Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and other departments to ensure safe and effective operations.
Qualifications
  • Substation Technicians must either have an Interprovincial journey Electrician trade certification and/or 2-year Electrical Diplomas from a recognized college or technical institute; e.g., Electrical Engineering Technologist
  • Substation Techs: Strong knowledge of electrical systems, components, and troubleshooting techniques.
