Job description

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

As a Staff Lawyer, you will provide legal advice and representation to individuals arrested and charged with criminal offences. You will play a vital role in protecting and asserting their legal rights and interests, fulfilling obligations under the Charter and the Legal Aid Act.

Employed by the Legal Aid Commission, you will contribute to the Department of Justice's mission to protect and promote the rights and safety of all people in the Northwest Territories through efficient and responsive justice programs and services. Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong knowledge of relevant Canadian and Northwest Territories laws, particularly criminal law.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in criminal law, including appearances before all levels of court.
  • Working knowledge of negotiation, mediation, collaboration, and alternative dispute resolution.
  • Ability to provide clear, well-reasoned legal opinions.
  • Commitment to access to justice and public service.
Key Qualifications
  • A Law degree and membership in the NWT bar.
  • One year of experience as legal counsel practicing full time in the criminal law area and experience working in a legal aid clinic environment is required.
