We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Med Surg department at the North Haida Gwaii Hospital.

In accordance with the established mission, vision, values and strategic priorities of Northern Health, the Registered Nurse (RN) works in Rural General practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and within a patient and family centered care model.

The RN practices in a variety of clinical settings and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of client care. Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the RN ensures the delivery of client-centered care by assisting individual clients and their families respond to changing health care needs. The RN demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities.

Rural community hospitals provide a wide range of services and, depending on the location, may require the RN to be competent in multiple clinical settings. This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training and experience.

Regional Emergency Training Program Details

The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence-informed online curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines Elsevier’s ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care at a novice level.

  • There are 2 training positions available for 2025/2026.
  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
  • Successful candidates may be required to complete prerequisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position.
  • Learners should expect to make a 4-6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program.
  • Must have completed Heart and Stroke BLS in the last 6 months.
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
  • Prior experience on an acute care ward (i.e., medical/surgical) is preferred.
  • Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation.
  • Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.

About Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre

Provides medical service to Old Masset, Port Clements and surrounding areas. The hospital and health centre has 4 Acute Care beds, 1 Palliative Care bed, 4 Long-term Care beds and a 4 unit assisted living complex. Some services provided at the hospital:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech and Language therapy
  • Mental Health and Substance Use service

Public Health provides many services to the community, including harm reduction, TB testing, prenatal services with pregnancy registry, kindergarten screening and school immunizations, birth control, pap tests, and STI testing.

Masset

Masset is situated along the shoreline of Masset Sound on Haida Gwaii. It is the largest village on the island and serves a rural area with a population of about 1,000 local residents and a surrounding area of 2,300. The village offers essential services and has schools and community amenities. Check out Masset, the place where the ocean meets the shore and the sunsets are breathtaking.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration with BCCNM.
  • Advanced preparation in the clinical specialty of the assigned area as required by the position:
  • Emergency: Advanced preparation in an ED clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education & experience. CPR within three (3) years.
  • Perinatal: Advanced preparation in a Perinatal clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education & experience. Current Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 2 years. CPR within three (3) years.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments and provide nursing care through prescribed technical and safety interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written and computer communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate data to problem-solve effectively.
