Do you have a passion for nursing? Do you want to extend your nursing knowledge? We have a training opportunity that may interest you. We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department at the Fort Nelson Hospital.

Within a model of person-centered care and guided by the vision and values of Northern Health, the Staff Nurse is responsible and accountable to provide professional nursing services in a manner consistent with Northern Health standards, the College of BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), the National Emergency Nursing Association (NENA) Standards and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics for Nursing.

Reporting to the Emergency Manager and as a member of a health care team, the Staff Nurse applies Emergency Nursing knowledge and skills to care for various complex health care issues, from non-urgent to life threatening, for clients who present to the Emergency Department.

Training Program Details

The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence-informed online curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level.

  • There is 1 training position available for 2025/2026.
  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
  • Successful candidates may be required to complete prerequisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position.
  • Learners should expect to make a 4-6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program.
  • Must have completed Heart and Stroke BLS in the last 6 months.
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
  • Prior experience on an acute care ward (i.e. medical/surgical) is preferred.
  • Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation.
  • Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00

Fort Nelson General Hospital is an important health centre for the north. The hospital houses 25 Acute Care beds and 8 Long-term beds. Services include: Lab and X-ray facilities; Community Counselling Services; Minor Surgery; Physiotherapy; Massage Therapy; Regular visitation from a pediatrician.

Fort Nelson is located in the northernmost reaches of the Rocky Mountains, with industries including forestry, natural gas, transportation and tourism. The population is approximately 3,370. Fort Nelson offers a slower pace lifestyle with a mix of amenities and outdoor activities.

Qualifications
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
  • Two (2) years' recent experience in a tertiary care Emergency Department and/or two years' recent medical/surgical experience.
  • Completion of an approved post-basic emergency nursing specialty program or equivalent training and experience may be considered.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Emergency room.
