Overview

Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach one section of EDIE4150: Inclusive Education: Specific Learning, 11:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

Calendar Description

This course introduces teacher candidates to the controversial field of specific learning disabilities. The course begins with a historical perspective on learning disabilities and an overview of relevant theoretical frameworks and models of learning disabilities. Participants examine current legislation in British Columbia and its relationship to the school district, school, and classroom levels. Two key topics include (1) screening, assessment and identification practices and (2) intervention strategies and how they affect classroom practice.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Education is required
  • A Master of Education is required; a PhD / EdD is strongly preferred
  • Recent experience as a K-12 teacher strongly preferred and three years full-time classroom experience is required
  • Advanced and current knowledge of the subject area is required
  • Experience and excellent understanding of child development and how this relates to elementary or secondary schools is required
  • Previous successful post-secondary teaching experience is preferred
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required
  • Proven skills in building intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect are required
  • Demonstrated experience in integrating Aboriginal knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required
  • Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA10) is required
