Job description

City Experiences is seeking a Server for our City Cruises operation in Toronto.

*Please note, this is a seasonal/contract position*

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences’ RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

The Server will provide a selection of high-quality food and beverages to guests onboard. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about all food offerings, cruise schedule and skyline attractions. The server will facilitate an amazing experience for their guests, be favorably viewed by supervisors and peers, and be swift and efficient in the execution of their assigned duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide amazing hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System.
  • Provide a warm and friendly greeting to tables within two minutes of guests getting settled.
  • Accurately take orders and enter them into the point-of-sale system.
  • Provide guests with water, coffee/tea, and bread service throughout the meal.
  • Serve food and beverages in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Event Crew on delivering plated food orders when required.
  • Assist the Event Crew when setting up the buffet station.
  • Follow steps of service.
  • Liaise with kitchen, manager, and assistant manager to resolve service and food issues, substitutions, or difficult guests.
  • Assume responsibility for assigned areas and assist team members with their assigned areas whenever necessary.
  • Communicate with other team members.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas and service stations.
  • Continuously set up tables with cutlery, glasses, napkins, and necessary condiments.
  • Participate in the celebration and entertainment experience of the guest.
  • Sell and upsell food and beverage products to maximize revenue.
  • Set up and break down dining room/event room and service stations as prescribed; this requires movement of dining cabin furniture.
  • Clean the dining room areas in between events, including vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping.
  • Light housekeeping (dust and wipe ceiling, mirrors, windows, and ledges and railings).
  • Accurately collect payment from guests for on-board purchases.
  • Assist post-cruise clean-up including but not limited to changing garbage bags and taking them out, polishing cutlery and china, cleaning and sanitizing washrooms, resetting tables with requested set-up, etc.
  • Provide information to guests including menu descriptions, order of service, entertainment options, cruise route, and points of interest.
  • Execute all opening and closing activities which include stocking, replenishing, wiping, sweeping, and other duties as required to maintain an appealing, hygienic, healthy, and safe environment for staff and guests in their designated work areas. Including the completion of all daily & weekly checklists.
  • Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shift (sorts, counts currency and coins) to ensure that amounts are correct and that change amounts are adequate.
  • Responsible for all sales transactions from selling food and beverage items to cash reconciling in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Rotate food and beverage products by practicing first in and first out procedures.
  • Check I.D. on any guests ordering alcohol who look under 30 years old.
  • May occasionally be asked to train new staff.
  • Following established guidelines, take initiative on work to be done.
  • Notify manager/assistant manager of out-of-stock items.
  • Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time.
  • Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager or supervisor on duty.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • O.S.S.D. or equivalent as recognized by the Ministry of Education.
  • One (1) year experience in high volume restaurant required.
  • Smart Serve Certification required.
  • Energetic and enthusiastic personality essential.
  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers.
  • Must possess a service orientation – actively looking for ways to help others.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Will work for extended periods without sitting.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 40 lbs (18 kgs).
  • Required to lift furniture and other heavy items such as dishes up and down stairs.
  • Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays.
  • Non-slip footwear is required to ensure safety in the workplace. Crew members must wear appropriate non-slip shoes during shifts.
  • If required, wear additional assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e. gloves, weather appropriate dress attire, sun protection).
