The Senior Structural Engineer will be part of an engineering team providing services primarily to large and small hydropower projects, with potential support for heavy industrial projects. The role involves providing technical leadership in designing concrete and steel structures such as dam spillways, intake structures, powerhouses, hoist support structures, and conducting stability analyses of dams and related structures. Responsibilities include site investigations, rehabilitation designs, development of structural concepts, and detailed engineering for multi-discipline projects. The incumbent will prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets, and reports, manage budgets and schedules, lead project teams, and coordinate with other disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Engineering Manager / Project Manager in delivering project scope, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • Lead a structural team to deliver small to medium projects, managing scope, cost, schedule, and quality.
  • Manage small structural sustaining capital projects.
  • Ensure safety and integrity principles are incorporated into structural documentation.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations and technical specifications for structural tasks involving construction or rehabilitation of hydroelectric structures.
  • Contribute to technical memos and reports.
  • Assist in preparing project cost estimates and schedules.
  • Review project specifications and design criteria.
  • Perform dam safety reviews and site inspections.
  • Review and seal documents and drawings as required.
  • Support proposal preparations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A recognized degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional engineer registration.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience.
  • Strong understanding of design codes and standards.
  • Experience with MathCad, Staad Pro, SAP2000, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of 3D data-centric design systems.
  • Familiarity with North American codes and standards.
  • Ability to delegate and supervise effectively.
  • At least 5 years of relevant hydropower project experience, including dam stability analysis, hoist structure design, seismic analysis, powerhouse design, penstocks, gate structures, and balance of plant components.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of engineering management systems.
  • Experience with project procedures and workflows.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • A Master’s degree in structural engineering is an asset.
