Retail Food Safety

The retail Food Safety team works with various internal and external teams (Banner Operations, third party service providers, regulators, business units, supply chain, etc.) to lead the implementation and enforcement of food safety protocols across all store locations. This team ensures compliance with company policies and Canadian regulations through audits, training programs, corrective action plans, and cross‑functional collaboration.

Job Description

The successful candidate will bring expertise in food safety and regulatory knowledge, analytical, and strong project management skills. This leadership position is critical to safeguarding public health while maintaining the integrity of our food safety program.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead a team to address food safety issues while ensuring alignment with company priorities.
  • Support development of strategic priorities for key performance metrics related to food safety.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Identify emerging risks proactively by staying informed on regulatory changes or industry trends.
  • Oversee Senior Food Safety Specialists responsible for field‑level activities across regions/banners.
  • Mentor team members through development opportunities that build long‑term capability within the organization.
  • Set clear expectations around accountability at all levels under your leadership scope.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Good Retail Practices (GRP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Standard Recipe Procedures (SRPs) at store‑level operations.
Regulatory Compliance & Standards
  • Stay current on all food safety‑related legislation in Canada and anticipate any developments that could affect food safety practices. Propose measures to address and comply with new regulations.
  • Act as a liaison with government inspectors (e.g., Public Health, CFIA) to address food safety issues and ensure compliance at both the banner and store level.
Digital Food Safety System Testing and Project Management
  • Develop test cases for application testing.
  • Coordinate project schedules to ensure business requirements are met.
  • Lead system testing, ensuring updates adhere to quality standards.
  • Inform key stakeholders of project status and potential risks on deadlines.
Job Requirements
  • Experience: 3‑5 years work experience in food safety, quality assurance, or related areas.
  • Educational Background: Post‑secondary degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Public Health Inspection.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of Canadian and Provincial regulatory requirements concerning food production, labeling, and food safety.
  • Independent and Driven: A self‑starter with the ability to work independently, without direct supervision, and a strong sense of ownership in your work.
  • Integrity and Reliability: Committed to always acting with integrity and accountability. A dependable individual who consistently produces high‑quality work.
  • Analytical & Communication Skills: Excellent analytical abilities, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the capacity to make clear and logical recommendations. Ability to communicate in English.
  • Leadership: Possess strong leadership skills and be able to effectively drive improvements in food safety performance while ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic priorities.
