Overview
Senior Electrical Engineer (P.Eng) role at Solaris MCI in Surrey, BC. Lead the design, analysis, and execution of electrical design for multi-disciplinary projects, from concept through commissioning. This role requires technical excellence, client-facing collaboration, and a commitment to high-quality, practical designs.
Responsibilities
- Develop electrical design for facilities from well sites to natural gas processing plants
- Produce power system drawings, such as single line diagrams, MCC layouts, cable schedules, contactor panel wiring schematics, electrical plot plans, building electrical layouts, lighting layouts, electric heat tracing design, and cable tray routing
- Perform fugitive emission studies and develop hazardous location classification drawings
- Assist in project scheduling and reporting
- Liaise with vendors and other disciplines to integrate equipment into the final design
- Perform power system analysis using SKM Power Tools and ETAP
- Regularly meet clients, ensuring Solaris drawing packages and standards meet client expectations
- Review concerns with Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Department Leads
- Support other disciplines in producing control system drawings, such as PLC / DCS cabinet layouts, control schematics, and wiring schematics
- Specify equipment requirements such as generators, power transformers, switchgear, MCCs, and ASDs, etc.
- Evaluate vendor quotations and liaise with Procurement to purchase equipment
- Collaborate with Solaris Project Engineers and Project Managers in front-end reviews of budgets and project scope documents
- Implement electrical, instrumentation and controls specifications and standards for consistency across designs
- Perform project drawing checking and ensure compliance with codes and standards
- Participate in project planning and communicate project deliverables
- Assist Heads of Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls to develop training programs and procedures
- Participate in HAZOP / SIL analysis
- Travel to field for project scoping, commissioning, and as-building as required
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Canada (mandatory)
- Minimum 10 years of Canadian experience
- Minimum 15 years of total professional experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred but not required)
- Proven track record of electrical design, studies, and project delivery on large-scale EPC projects
- Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA standards, and safety regulations
- Familiarity with hazardous area design and explosion-proof requirements in oil & gas environments
Electrical Design & Engineering Expertise
- Single-line diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts
- Load flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, and coordination studies
- LV, MV, and HV power distribution systems
- Motor control centers and protective relaying
- Hands-on experience in industrial electrical system integration with controls, SCADA, and instrumentation
- Understanding of electrical safety protocols and compliance with energy codes
Industry Experience
- Preferred: Oil & Gas / LNG / Petrochemical sectors in North America
- Considered: candidates with industrial facility design experience (e.g., mining, manufacturing plants, power generation)
- Not Suitable: candidates with only maintenance or manufacturing background

- Communicate directly with clients to understand technical requirements and build trust
- Translate complex engineering concepts into client-friendly language
- Attend client meetings, technical reviews, and present project updates
- Collaborate within multi-disciplinary project teams
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers

Compensation, Benefits and Growth
