Overview

Parks Canada – Jasper National Park, Alberta. Position: Resource Management Officer II (EG-04). Salary: $71,741 to $90,184 per year. Job type: Full-time. Location: Jasper, AB. Closing date: 6 February 2025 at 23:59 Pacific Time. Apply online through jobs.gc.ca. Eligibility: All persons who have legal status to work in Canada. Duties
  • Lead ecological integrity monitoring projects by collecting and analyzing data, developing and managing databases, and preparing reports. Example projects include mammal occupancy monitoring using a network of remote cameras, alpine plant phenology, species at risk surveys and bird abundance monitoring.
  • Organize active management projects aimed at improving ecological integrity or helping to recover species at risk, including planning, data collection, logistics and project implementation (e.g., whitebark pine restoration and management actions to support healthy wide-ranging mammal, endangered bat or bird populations).
  • Supervise ecological integrity monitoring staff and students, and provide guidance to volunteers.
  • Coordinate projects and team schedules to access remote monitoring and restoration sites and maintain ground access to sites.
  • Assist in organizing training to support backcountry travel skills and abilities for the team.
  • Collect data by traveling in the remote backcountry, by foot or by horse, on physically demanding trips up to 10 days in length (which may require trail clearing using a chainsaw).
  • Note: This position is located in Jasper and requires an in-person presence due to field work requirements.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, geology) or other discipline relevant to the position, or an acceptable combination of two years of post-secondary study related to environmental and/or natural sciences, with degree equivalency.
  • Experience: Traveling or working in the remote wilderness environment in all seasons; leading two or more phases of field research projects (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, data/sample collection requirements, data/sample analysis, presentation of results); making recommendations regarding research project design; preparing technical/scientific reports, manuscript drafts, protocols, presentations or web content.
  • Knowledge: Methodology and procedures for scientific testing and data/sample collection; operation and maintenance of specialized technical and scientific equipment; knowledge of terrestrial/marine environment, vegetation and wildlife characteristics; understanding of environment-specific weather conditions for Jasper National Park; and environmental/natural sciences theories and principles.
  • Abilities: Follow appropriate protocols for data/sample collection and data compilation; conduct analysis and monitor spatial and non-spatial data using automated software; determine data manipulation requirements in consultation with scientists; conduct and coordinate field work in active management and monitoring projects; prepare and present scientific reports and communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Personal Suitability: Exercises sound judgement; shares Parks Canada’s vision; makes things happen; communicates effectively; takes responsibility.
Assessment and language

Additional Education and Experience (optional)
  • Additional Education: Master’s degree in conservation biology, ecological science, resource management, or a related environmental science field (degree equivalency may apply).
  • Additional Experience: Experience completing multi-day wilderness trips by foot and/or horseback in mountainous terrain while conducting field work; experience in supervision.
Operational Requirements
  • Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment; willing to work and travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
  • Willing and able to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays as required; willing to obtain certification for operation of ground (e.g., all-terrain vehicles) and marine equipment as needed.
Conditions of Employment
  • Reliability Status security clearance (as required for federal employment).
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver’s license; other licenses may be required.
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate (minimum 40 hours) and CPR certificate; pre-placement and periodic medical checks may be required.
