Overview

Position: Registered Practical Nurse

Department: Operating Room

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is responsible for providing safe, competent and ethical nursing care as outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and Guidelines for Ethical Behaviour, North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) policies/procedures, and the standards of care appropriate to the area of clinical practice. Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) provide the full range of care requirements for patients with predictable outcomes as patient complexity increases there is a corresponding increase in the need for RPN’s to consult with RN’s (CNO Standards).

Qualifications

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate required (training delivered by Health Centre upon hire)
  • Must be willing to function within the RPN full scope of practice including the following:
  • Aseptic technique
  • Certification in IV therapy
  • Capillary Blood Glucose testing certification
  • Certification in medication administration
  • Catheterization
  • Related surgical experience in a surgical care setting including Day Surgery (within the last three years) required

  • Ability to participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team with the ability to function well in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment required
  • High level of interpersonal skills required
  • Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to surgical and radiological patients (adults and children) required
  • Ability to relate to children and knowledge of paediatric teaching and learning principles required
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision required
  • Strong assessment skills required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Computer skills required
  • Good attendance and work record
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
