Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgical Inpatient Unit/Surgical Assessment Clinic
We’re seeking a Registered Nurse to join our Surgical Inpatient Unit and Surgical Assessment Clinic. This role requires the ability to work in a dynamic, team‑oriented environment and to provide high‑quality patient care in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Utilizes the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for assigned patients, applying specialized knowledge, skills and judgment.
- Coordinates and delivers care within the framework of collaborative practice; consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members as required.
- Demonstrates excellence in communication, patient and family‑centred care, and teamwork.
- Demonstrates proficiency and advanced knowledge in pre‑ and post‑surgical education and assessment.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives to ensure a high level of patient care.
- Phlebotomy, IV initiation and ECG.
- Documents proficiently according to standards and hospital policies.
- Participates in quality assurance and continuing education to maintain practices aligned with evidence, standards and best practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing, or eligible for registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Completion of Coronary Care 1 or equivalent (ex. QHC Cardio Concepts) or able to obtain within 6 months.
- Current certification in BCLS or CPR, or proof of enrolment in a recertification course. A copy of a valid certificate may be requested at the time of hire/transfer.
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in inpatient surgery or perioperative surgical services, within the past three (3) years.
- Sound understanding of surgical and anesthesia risk factors and associated management.
- Proficient in modalities and principles of adult and paediatric education.
- Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload. (Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) available to review).
Physical Demands
- Strength: lifting and carrying average weight 20 pounds; max 50 pounds; pushing/pulling average 10‑15 pounds; max 30 pounds; patient assist approx. 100 pounds.
- Mobility: standing constantly; walking, bending/stooping frequently; sitting, twisting/turning, bending, crouching/squatting, kneeling occasionally; balancing and climbing rarely.
- Dexterity: frequent use of upper limbs for gripping, pinching, range of motion; occasional fine finger movements; foot action rarely.
