Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, culturally safe, and community-based nursing services to O’Chiese First Nation members across the lifespan. The RN delivers clinical care, health promotion, disease prevention, case management, and emergency response services in alignment with professional nursing standards, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) requirements (where applicable), Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards, and O’Chiese First Nation policies. The RN works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to support holistic physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness within the community.
Key Responsibilities1. Clinical Care & Nursing Practice
- Provide direct nursing care including assessment, diagnosis (within RN scope), treatment, monitoring, and evaluation of clients.
- Perform comprehensive health assessments, triage, and nursing interventions for acute, chronic, and complex health conditions.
- Administer medications, immunizations, injections, IV therapy, wound care, and other treatments in accordance with scope of practice and medical directives.
- Provide prenatal, postnatal, child, youth, adult, and elder care services as assigned.
- Respond to medical emergencies, stabilize patients, and coordinate emergency transport when required.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client health records using approved documentation systems.
2. Chronic Disease & Case Management
- Coordinate and manage care plans for clients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, and mental health concerns.
- Monitor treatment adherence, follow-up care, and outcomes in collaboration with physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and allied health professionals.
- Provide client and family education related to disease management, medications, and lifestyle modifications.
3. Public Health & Preventive Services
- Deliver community health programs including immunization clinics, communicable disease control, health screenings, and wellness checks.
- Participate in outbreak management, surveillance, reporting, and infection prevention and control activities.
- Support maternal-child health, sexual health education, harm reduction, and health promotion initiatives.
4. Mental Wellness & Holistic Care
- Provide trauma-informed, culturally safe nursing care to clients accessing mental wellness and addiction-related services.
- Work closely with Mental Wellness teams, Recovery Coaches, NNADAP workers, and external partners.
- Support clients experiencing crisis and provide referrals to appropriate services.
5. Cultural Safety & Community Engagement
- Deliver care that respects O’Chiese First Nation culture, traditions, values, and community protocols.
- Build trusting relationships with clients, families, Elders, and community members.
- Participate in community events, health education sessions, and culturally relevant wellness initiatives when requested.
6. Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Community Health Representatives, Mental Wellness staff, social services, and external agencies.
- Participate in case conferences, care planning meetings, and community-based service coordination.
- Advocate for clients to ensure continuity of care across health systems.
7. Documentation, Compliance & Quality Improvement
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, licensing requirements, and organizational policies.
- Complete required reports for ISC, AHS, and other funders as applicable.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and program evaluations.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to privacy legislation (FOIP/PIPEDA where applicable).
8. Education, Mentorship & Professional Practice
- Provide health education to clients, families, and the community.
- Support and mentor Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Community Health staff, students, and support workers as assigned.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing education and mandatory training.
Qualifications & RequirementsEducation & Certification
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from an accredited institution.
- Current registration and good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
- Current CPR Level C and Basic Life Support (BLS); ACLS/PALS an asset.
- Immunization certification and medication administration competencies.
Experience
- Minimum 2–3 years of nursing experience preferred.
- Experience in community health, Indigenous health, rural/remote nursing, or public health is a strong asset.
- Experience working with chronic disease management, emergency response, and mental wellness considered an asset.

- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of community-based and primary health care models.
- Understanding of Indigenous health, cultural safety, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Working Conditions
- Primarily based in a community health centre with occasional outreach and home visits.
- May involve exposure to communicable diseases, high-stress situations, and emergency response.
- Flexible scheduling may be required, including on-call, evenings, or weekends as assigned.
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Adherence to O’Chiese First Nation policies, procedures, and code of conduct.

Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
