Principal Mechanical Designer (Permanent)

Location: Victoria BC or Ottawa ON or Halifax NS

Expected Salary : $86879 to $106185

In determining the final salary Babcock will consider a variety of factors including the successful Candidates skills and experience and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and be presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

In this role you will
  • Design and develop solutions with a Mechanical / Structural focus for the integration of new sub-systems / components into existing systems.
  • Provide mechanical subject matter expertise and practical experience into multidisciplinary teams delivering engineering design, development and design intent maintenance projects.
  • Lead small to medium multi-disciplinary teams to deliver engineering design and development projects and meet contracted time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Allocate tasks to designers, check design and drawing outputs and ensure integration of interdisciplinary designs in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical assistance and feedback to designers to ensure the use of correct methods and tools for assigned tasks.
  • Conduct independent technical studies and assessments of marine mechanical and structural elements and analyze recommended changes to existing mechanical systems to assess the design impact of proposed changes.
  • Communicate technical subjects, issues, solutions and risks to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Participate in the development of in-house processes and tools used to support and improve the way we work.
  • Support the production of technical drawings and specifications to support the implementation of Engineering Changes on board Victoria Class Submarines.
  • Work directly and communicate effectively with other stakeholders including project managers, configuration engineering and other departments to meet delivery targets.
  • Liaise with sub-contractors to ensure design for manufacturing.
  • Conduct onsite inspections / surveys as necessary.

The ideal candidate brings

  • Strong technical skills including post-secondary education; degree, diploma and/or certificate in Mechanical Engineering technology or equivalent experience.
  • Registration as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT), Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) or Professional Engineer (PEng) with the applicable provincial association.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in mechanical drafting and design.
  • Submarine-specific knowledge such as the standards that control mechanical design elements of the Victoria Class submarines (asset).
  • Experience with creation of Engineering Change Installation Packages.
  • Recent and significant experience working with CAD tools and overseeing the CAD work of others.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience directing technical teams in a collaborative working environment.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills including writing formal reports and delivering presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior staff and industry placement trainees (Co-ops).
  • You are eligible for a Canadian Secret Security and ITAR Clearance.
