Position Summary

Northern Health is looking for an experienced, highly efficient, and self‑directed Assistant to support the Primary Care department. In accordance with Northern Health's vision of an idealized system of services where people and their families receive primary care services in Primary Care Homes supported by interprofessional teams, the Primary Care Assistant functions as a member of the interprofessional team. As an integral member of the team, the Primary Care Assistant works to support Primary Care providers and the Interprofessional Team (IPT) in the delivery of safe, efficient, and quality Primary Care Services throughout Northern Health. The Primary Care Assistant provides both operational and administrative support in a clinic and/or other community setting in accordance with Northern Health policies and procedures.

Shift Rotation / Hours of Work

Monday – Thursday, Days, 08:30 to 16:30

Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre

provides medical service to Old Masset, Port Clements and surrounding areas. The hospital and health centre has 4 Acute Care beds, 1 Palliative Care bed, 4 Long‑term Care beds and a 4‑unit assisted living complex.

  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech and Language therapy
  • Mental Health and Substance Use service
  • Home and Community Care and Home Support services
  • Visiting specialists in Pediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Respirology, Rheumatology, Urology and Ophthalmology
  • Video conferencing capabilities with specialists or physicians in other areas

Public Health provides many services to the community. Some of these services include:

  • Harm reduction services
  • TB testing
  • Prenatal services with pregnancy registry
  • Kindergarten screening and school immunizations
  • Birth control, pap tests, STI testing
Masset

Masset is situated along the shoreline of Masset Sound on Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, and is the largest village on the island. Major industries are logging, fishing and tourism. Masset provides services for a larger rural area with a population of 1,000 local residents and services a surrounding area of 2,300 including Tow Hill (unincorporated) and Old Masset (IR). incorporated in 1961, the Village of Masset (pop. 1,000) is the oldest of the island's municipalities. The community has one elementary school and one secondary school.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12.
  • Graduation from an Office Assistant Course from an accredited Community College plus two years recent, related experience in a health care setting.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and work roles.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of an integrated administrative team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using both written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to type 40 WPM.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to follow detailed instruction.
  • Ability to use a high degree of tact and diplomacy in working with others.
  • Ability to work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient safety practices, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a fast‑paced health care environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer word processing, spreadsheet applications, and specialized clinical information systems.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License
