Overview

With an annual budget of $1.5 billion, 14,700 staff, 1,235 physicians, 3,292 volunteers, 17 foundations and 16 auxiliary and alumnae organizations, Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is the largest regional health authority in New Brunswick and the second largest in Atlantic Canada. Committed to delivering quality and safe care in English and French to patients, clients and their families, Horizon operates 12 hospitals and more than 100 medical facilities, clinics, and offices throughout New Brunswick, and also serves patients from northern Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Role and Responsibilities

Working in close collaboration with the Senior Medical Executive Director and the Emergency Room Site Lead, and in alignment with the Corporation’s mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities, the Emergency Medical Department Head is accountable for the leadership and management of one of the hospital’s most high-profile and heavily utilized services—the Emergency Department.

The role encompasses oversight of physician management, scheduling, and performance within local facilities, ensuring seamless, high-quality emergency care delivery. The Department Head will bring creativity, adaptability, and strong clinical leadership to guide physicians in delivering patient-centered care within a collaborative, team-based environment.

They will apply their medical expertise to maintain the highest possible standards of care within available resources, while fostering an environment of professional excellence. The Physician Emergency Medical Department Head will also serve as an ambassador for the department, promoting and maintaining positive relationships with patients, families, visitors, staff, and the broader community.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished and dynamic leader with a demonstrated passion for emergency medicine and a clear understanding of the Emergency Department’s role within the broader organization. They will possess the ability to effectively balance clinical priorities with corporate objectives. The successful candidate will be a respected medical leader and physician in good standing with the College, eligible for credentialing within the department.

They will foster strong, collaborative relationships within the department and with medical and corporate leaders across the organization, always prioritizing excellence in patient care and the provider experience. In partnership with their dyad counterpart, they will align departmental needs with organizational resources and demands, maintaining a strong focus on quality, timely access to care, operational flow, and consistency of service across all sites.
