Job description
Overview

To provide patient and family centered care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario and organizational standards. The Operating Room Technician (ORT) ensures that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Duties
  • Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care.
  • Effectively use the Standards of nursing practice and the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Handle instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Set up sterile field with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications / solutions required for the procedure, maintain sterility throughout the procedure.
  • Assist with preparation of instruments for transport post procedure and assist with terminal cleaning of the room.
  • Compliant with legislation, and organizational and departmental policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Accountable for decisions and actions and for maintaining competence.
  • Involved with decision-making process on hospital, program and other nursing committees as appropriate.
  • Provide input into the development of program operating plans and processes.
  • Exercise judgment by participating in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care according to the College of Nurses Standards.
  • Maintain commitment to self-growth and professional development.
  • Act as a professional and knowledgeable role model or mentor to colleagues and students.
  • Remain current in knowledge and application of best practice through the utilization of appropriate research and literature.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
  • Participates in research opportunities.
  • Assume other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing.
Experience
  • Minimum 1 year Operating Room experience
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated competency with patient care requirements and specialized equipment as appropriate to the clinical area, including but not limited to:
    • Theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique
    • Surgical anatomy and surgical techniques for specialties (orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, urology, oral and vascular surgery)
    • Use of surgical instruments in ways consistent with their design and purpose
Ability
  • Proficient in use of computers Microsoft Office and required software programs.
  • Working knowledge, understanding and demonstrated competency in the application of the standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Ability to work with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships including the ability to interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, including conflict resolution skills.
