Ontario Promise Corps - Early Learning Advisor
The City of Ontario invites applications for a grant-funded position as an Ontario Promise Corps Raising Little Learners Early Learning Advisor. This AmeriCorps member will build relationships and awareness of the program in targeted neighborhoods via outreach and marketing, recruit participants, and implement workshop lessons for groups of parents/caregivers and their children aged 0-4. The selected candidate will collaborate with librarians, business owners, the public and administrators to establish positive connections with students and families; assist in evaluating and refining the program; create marketing materials; and perform other related duties as necessary. The successful candidate will embody the department’s mission and vision and the principles of the City’s Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
Note: This position is grant funded and is NOT considered a City of Ontario position. Incumbents are not City employees and are not eligible for City-sponsored benefits. A program-funded benefit package includes healthcare, childcare (space limited), mileage reimbursement, and an Education Award (up to $10,000) upon completion of required service hours.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
- Conduct group seminar sessions with caregivers and their children using literacy materials from the Every Child Ready to Read curriculum.
- Assist participant children in improving early literacy skills and readiness for school.
- Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement, including implementing Every Child Ready to Read interventions.
- Develop and maintain a weekly instruction schedule for students.
- Assess participants’ progress through progress monitoring and benchmarking with high accuracy.
- Document weekly progress scores and interventions.
- Review participant data with program supervisor to gauge effectiveness and adjust strategies as needed.
- Communicate with participants in an age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate manner.
- Professionally communicate with staff, program participants and the public; build professional relationships to maintain program integrity.
- Ensure confidentiality of participant records and test scores.
- Attend required trainings, meetings and coaching sessions, including professional development groups.
- Create and implement an individual professional development plan with goal setting.
- Maintain an ongoing sustainability binder for outreach, marketing, workshops, curriculum and evaluations.
- Develop marketing materials and relationships with community organizations and local residents.
- Create and present formal program presentations and assist with related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s Degree or equivalent in any field (or as noted under Desirable qualifications). An Associate’s Degree in Child Development or closely related field is desirable.
- Desirable: Previous experience in youth, service, K-16 education, or nonprofit work; bilingual in Spanish.
- Special Requirements: Must be 18 years or older; reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally; ability to work full-time (approx. 40 hours/week) from November 2025 to September 2026; ability to complete at least 1,700 service hours; ability to work evenings and weekends as required; ability to work on-site and/or virtually as required; maintain regular attendance; follow City of Ontario and AmeriCorps policies; successful Live Scan fingerprint review.
