Job summary

A community-focused organization in Ontario is seeking an On Call Parks & Recreation Worker responsible for maintaining parks and recreational areas year-round. The role includes snow maintenance in winter and landscaping in summer. Applicants should have a high school diploma and at least one year of experience in landscaping or horticulture. A valid G2 license is required. This is a casual position offering a payrate of $25.00/hour.

ON CALL PARKS & RECREATION WORK

Employment Status: On Call/Casual

Department: Capital Projects & Public Works

Classification: CS 2 $25.00/ hour

Reporting Relationship

The Parks and Recreation Worker will be under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.

Position Summary

The Parks and Recreation Worker will be responsible for maintenance of the parks and recreational areas of M’Chigeeng throughout the seasons. Winter season: provide ice resurfacing operations for arena, outdoor rinks, and skating pads. Summer season: provide seasonal maintenance to all M’Chigeeng parks and recreational facilities.

Essential Functions
  • Perform ongoing maintenance to MFN parks and amenities (sports fields, parks, cemeteries, and facilities).
  • Perform routine maintenance as needed for Splash Pad site.
  • Mowing, trimming, aeration, fertilization.
  • Maintaining horticulture installations and displays – planting, weeding.
  • Litter pick up and scheduled garbage/recycling collection and disposal.
  • Cemetery maintenance including internments.
  • Operate a variety of MFN vehicles and attachments (assignment based on operational need and license requirements being met).
  • Assist with inspection, cleaning, and repair of park amenities.
  • Safely operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and power / hand‑held tools.
  • Clean and maintain vehicles and equipment and identify hazards and/or mechanical issues requiring service repair.
  • Deliver routine and specialized maintenance.
  • Complete and submit daily, accurate electronic work entries and daily tailboards.
  • Attend various training sessions throughout the season.
  • Provide logistical support for community events including deliveries, set up and take down.
  • Monitoring park conditions and reporting information to supervisor.
  • Plants and maintains annuals and perennials.
  • Maintains inventory of hanging baskets and other materials needed.
  • Performs winter maintenance functions as required: evening snow patrol (plowing, shovelling and salt application) of parks, arenas, and community centres throughout MFN (as requested).
  • Maintain ice surface and/or installation of proper ice, ice lines etc.
  • Maintain ice plant and other equipment essential to arena operations (and monitor all plant compressors).
  • Maintain and keep clean at all times arena and canteen area.
  • Keep daily and monthly records of operations.
  • Assist with canteen operations including ordering, processing and cash maintenance (financial summaries).
  • Assist with scheduling and record keeping for ice rentals, arena rentals and provide reports for same.
  • Supervise employees where required.
  • Must have working knowledge of compressor systems and ice making equipment (Zamboni).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in landscaping, horticulture, or related field.
  • Valid G2 class licence.
  • Experience with horticulture equipment and powered hand tools.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to deal directly with the public.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in inclement weather.
  • Ability to work weekends and morning and afternoon shifts if required.
Other
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Understanding and fluency of Anishinabek language is a strong asset or a willingness to learn.
  • Must be flexible to work long hours in peak periods, evenings and weekends as required.
  • Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, customs, and practices.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • CRC is required, current thirty (30) days original or certified copy.
