About the position: The Fleet Technician ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of municipal vehicles and heavy equipment through inspection, maintenance, and repair. Responsibilities include diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues; performing preventive and corrective maintenance; and supporting seasonal operations like snow and road maintenance. The role involves using diagnostic software to maintain service records, manage parts inventory, and support fleet management. The Technician also provides mentorship and supervision to the maintenance team, ensures compliance with municipal safety programs and provincial regulations, and operates equipment safely. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to safety are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Fleet Maintenance and Repair
    • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on small engines and municipal vehicles, including emergency units.
    • Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs to meet municipal standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Safety
    • Ensure compliance with the Alberta Traffic Act and the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulations, and Code.
    • Maintain accurate service records and documentation, support workplace safety programs.
  • Technical Operations and Diagnostics
    • Utilize technical manuals, diagnostic software, and test equipment to identify and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
    • Operate municipal vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently to support operational and emergency response requirements.
  • Inventory and Resource Management
    • Manage procurement, tracking, and inventory of parts and supplies in line with municipal procedures.
    • Maintain an organized and up-to-date inventory of parts, supplies, and components.
    • Monitor fleet vehicles, inventory, and municipal operators for compliance with the Municipality of Jasper’s fleet and asset management programs.
  • Staff Supervision and Support
    • Provide mentorship, training, and guidance to apprentices and fleet personnel.
    • Supervise work and monitor performance to ensure compliance with safety, operational standards, and municipal procedures while fostering professional growth.
    • Train, monitor, and supervise apprentices and fleet personnel to ensure adherence to safety and operational standards.
    • Provide guidance and oversight to the Municipal Fleet Mechanic.
    • Monitor staff performance to ensure all work is carried out in accordance with established training, procedures, and standards.
    • Monitor and support staff to maintain an appropriate level of productivity, ensuring performance meets operational expectations.
Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • Accredited Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson Certification with a minimum of 2 years of experience.
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) Technician.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certification.
  • First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Class 3 Driver’s License with Airbrakes Endorsement.

Preferred:

  • Class 1 Driver’s License.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Small engine repair experience.
  • Certified training in forklift operation.
  • Heavy equipment operation experience (examples include loader, grader, backhoe).
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office suite and Alberta Transportation online services.
  • Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • Ability to safely lift to 35 kilograms.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to the operation and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Traffic Act.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code.

Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of one year experience for one year of education. Candidates with lower qualifications are encouraged to apply and may be considered at a lower classification and pay.
