Description
Position Summary
Incumbent of positions in this series inspect, troubleshoot, and repair motor vehicles and equipment for use by agency personnel; consult with operators, manufacturers or dealers’ representatives regarding specifications or problems relating to the operation of motor vehicles and/or equipment; write orders and specifications for new vehicles and equipment; and perform related work as required. This is an essential position, and incumbent is expected to report for all Snow and ice events.
Duties and Responsibilities
The selected applicants will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of motor equipment/vehicles used by MassDOT and assigned to District Two and will be assigned to the Chicopee Maintenance Garage. The basic purpose of this work is to maintain and repair motor vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
With little or no guidance or assistance, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and powered equipment with the use of appropriate test equipment and hand and power tools. Work to be performed in MassDOT garages or property.
Diagnoses the cause of faulty mechanical performance on gasoline and diesel engines and estimates the extent of needed repairs on gasoline and similar powered equipment such as passenger vehicles, trucks, and other equipment used at MassDOT.
Repairs and maintains radiators, cooling systems and engines including valves, bearings, shafts, rings, oil pumps, brake systems, fuel pumps, carburetors, gasoline or diesel fuel injections systems and timing mechanisms on gasoline powered equipment.
Repairs and services conventional transmissions and make minor adjustments to automatic transmissions. Repairs and services clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters and gear trains on automobiles, trucks and construction equipment used by MassDOT.
Maintains repairs and performs diagnostics functions on ignitions systems, switches, generators, and voltage regulators, alternators, starting motors, air conditioners and electrical systems on all types of motorized equipment.
Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and replaces elements of chassis assembly including frames, springs, steering, dump bodies and brakes.
Balances wheels, mounts, dismounts services and repairs tires of all types and sizes on all types of equipment.
Performs body and fender work on all types of equipment including restoring, scraping, treating and spray painting of metal surfaces and removes, repairs, or replaces glass, doors, seats and upholster.
Performs torch cutting metal parts and equipment.
Under direct supervision or in cooperation with a Mechanic IV or MassDOT Motor Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, performs complex mechanical work on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems and power trains.
May operate such equipment as honing machines, valve resurfacing machines, drill presses or grinders.
Obtains parts and supplies from stock and initiates request for special replacement parts or equipment as required for assigned repair work.
Maintains necessary time and cost distribution records related to motor equipment maintenance and repair as required.
Issue Massachusetts Vehicle and Emission stickers.
Drives passenger cars, trucks, and other MassDOT equipment as necessary.
Must be available for scheduled overtime work and overtime work during snow & ice operations and emergency conditions.
Perform other work as required.
