Job description

Energy storage is one of the most exciting areas in energy today. Massive amounts of storage are required if renewable energy is to take its rightful place on the electric grid. Invinity provides an alternative to lithium-ion batteries because the technology that works so well in our pockets doesn’t work at grid scale—it wears out, limits use, and even catches fire.

Manufactured as a standardized product in a factory, Invinity’s vanadium flow batteries don’t degrade, won’t catch fire, and can operate continuously from full charge to full discharge for 25 years. With over 75,000 kilowatt-hours deployed across 82 projects in 15 countries, we lead the industry in flow battery technology. Supported by global investors and government agencies, we’re scaling rapidly to meet the world’s demand for safe, long‑duration energy storage.

Join us as we transform renewable energy into a stable and dependable contributor to the transition to net zero.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Materials Scientist / Materials Engineer to join our Product Development organization. Reporting to the Director of Stack Development, you will focus on developing and qualifying advanced materials for Invinity’s next‑generation vanadium flow battery stacks. Your expertise in electrodes, bipolar plates, ion exchange membranes, and polymer materials will be critical to improving performance, durability, and manufacturability.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and qualify materials for electrodes, bipolar plates, ion exchange membranes, and polymer components in flow battery stacks.
  • Interpret analytical data from material evaluation techniques, including DMA, DSC, mechanical testing, and porosity testing.
  • Develop understanding of material properties on performance, degradation mechanisms, and lifetime performance.
  • Generate material characterization datasets for product design & process capability.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including design, manufacturing engineering, and supplier quality to integrate materials into commercial products.
  • Support supplier identification and qualification and material specification documentation. Participate in material supplier PPAP activities.
  • Contribute to failure investigations and root‑cause analysis for material‑related issues.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate findings to internal stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 4–7 years of experience in materials development and characterization, preferably in energy storage, flow batteries, or electrochemical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of composites, polymer materials, and coatings.
  • Define material defect criteria and ensure alignment with DFMEA and quality standards.
  • Familiarity with electrodes, bipolar plates, and ion exchange membranes.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation of material behavior.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and communication skills.
Assets
  • Experience with flow batteries, fuel cells, or similar electrochemical systems.
  • Experience with PLM systems and documentation standards.
  • Experience in specifying roll good materials.
  • Knowledge of material supply chains and manufacturing processes.
  • Project management experience.
  • Hands‑on skills in lab setup, sample preparation, and test jig assembly.
