Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer works with Design Engineering, Quality Assurance and Production Support to design, monitor and optimize the manufacturing processes for existing and new product lines.

  1. Evaluate new product designs and advise on their suitability for production.
  2. Support production in lead time improvements and scrap reduction using Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  3. Design new processes, procedures and manufacturing systems. Take a lead role in implementing including training of Shop Floor employees and Support Staff.
  4. Work cell and production line balancing, line layout design, time and motion studies.
  5. Apply working knowledge of product design and assembly to the manufacturing process.
  6. Development, design and implementation of Production Jigs and Fixtures improving safety, product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
  7. Estimate costs, production times, or staffing requirements for new designs.
  8. Develop standardized design criteria across product lines and participate in design reviews ensuring that Design for Manufacturing Principles are applied.
  9. Lead the transition from Engineering Design to Manufacturing. This includes the optimal development of routings and structures for use by Procurement and Production while ensuring that Quality Standards and configuration traceability requirements are met.
  10. Design and implement new production line and facility layouts.
  11. Respond to process failures including root cause analysis.
  12. Develop, modify and update work instructions required to build product.
  13. Ensure that product quality and margin is improved through the reduction in scrap & rework. Implement process improvements by identifying and eliminating non-value added activities.
  14. Support product non-conformance investigation.
  15. Identify root cause of rejects and make recommendation for corrective actions.
  16. Carry out periodical process review and identify the root cause of any deficiencies found and ensure corrective action takes place to eliminate the source of any deficiency.
  17. Work with Procurement and Production Support to improve the material flow and reduce inventory.
  18. Identify potential product improvement opportunities by liaising with the manufacturing cells, engineering and other departments.
  19. Investigate new techniques and equipment to ensure that the Company’s manufacturing philosophy incorporates relevant current best practice.
  20. Act as a change agent within production to educate and influence team members on process implementation and improvements.

Required Skills:

  1. Degree in Industrial, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or other Engineering discipline with significant manufacturing experience.
  2. Experience working as a Manufacturing Engineer or similar role in an industrial environment.
  3. The successful person must be able to gain the appropriate Canadian government security clearance and satisfy all requirements to be able to work on Canadian Controlled Goods projects.

Desired Skills:

  1. Continuous improvement techniques such as LEAN, Six-Sigma and TQM.
  2. Work measurement and standardization.
  3. Experience within aerospace and defence is a distinct advantage.
  4. In-depth understanding of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Visio.
  5. Competency in ERP systems including development of routings and Bill of Material structures.
  6. Strong technical writing ability. Previous experience writing work instructions is preferred.
  7. Familiarity with 3D CAD drawing packages (SolidWorks preferred).
  8. Competency in 2D CAD design (AutoCAD or MicroStation preferred).
  9. Strong data analysis abilities, including Statistical Process Control.
  10. Understanding of Engineering Change Control processes.
  11. Interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and other documentation.
  12. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  13. Willing to learn quickly, be agile, and innovate to solve complex problems.

NOTE: It is preferred that the successful candidate have the flexibility to work possible shift work, including but not limited to both evening and night shift times.
