Hourly Wage: $20.65

Position overview

Line Cooks are responsible for preparing food items for a full-serve restaurant while maintaining a healthy and safe kitchen workspace. In the course of this work, Line Cooks will be required to use hot cooktops, sharp tools, and other cooking equipment. Occasionally, restocking and storing inventory will also be necessary.

In carrying out the duties of this position, a great deal of autonomy is exercised with final oversight by the Food Services Supervisor. It is important that the Line Cooks work closely with the Food Services Supervisor to stay up to date on the basic overall operations of the restaurant. Service to students and guests is a top priority.

You will learn to:

  • Plan, prepare, and present quality food and beverages for a variety of hospitality environments in accordance with legislation as it applies to the industry.
  • Apply the fundamentals of culinary theory in the preparation of foods for a variety of menus.
  • Maintain a high standard of sanitation and safety in a food service establishment.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and cook food items for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and catering events in accordance with provided specifications/recipes.
  • Follow all specifications for ingredients and plate presentation.
  • Operate cooktops and other kitchen equipment.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment to ensure the health and safety of guests and coworkers at all times; clean and sanitize all work areas and frequently touched surfaces before and after every use, including (but not limited to): food preparation areas, cooking equipment, storage areas, floors, service areas.
  • Work as a team with fellow Food Services staff.
Other general duties
  • Work in accordance with CSSI policies, by-laws, and procedures, including the CSSI Mission Statement.
  • Maintain professionalism and impartiality when handling sensitive personal information; confidentiality for business practices.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety laws, policies, and procedures; CSSI’s dress code.
  • Work in an organized manner with attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality.
  • Attend meetings and committees when required; build relationships between CSSI and Conestoga College.
  • Mandatory attendance at monthly staff meetings and CSSI-related training days.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working conditions

Physical demands

  • May involve long periods of standing and walking. Lifting of supplies and materials up to 50 lbs may be required from time to time.

Environmental conditions

  • Work primarily in an enclosed food preparation area with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Work near hazardous kitchen equipment, including cooking ranges and sharp objects. Some work may be required after regular hours and on weekends.

Sensory demands

  • May require long periods of work in a warm and busy environment.

Mental demands

  • Maintain a consistent sense of urgency while handling multiple priorities within short timeframes, which can be stressful. Interactions with a wide variety of people are common.
Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a full-time program at Conestoga College and be a fee-paying student.
  • Must be available to work up to 20 hours per week on days, evenings, and weekends as required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in cooking and food preparation.
  • Understanding of CSI’s food services.
  • Comprehension of instructions and information related to CSI’s food services.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Cultural competence.
  • Food Handler’s Certificate is an asset, but not required.
Student eligibility

All students in this position must:

  • Be in a full-time degree, diploma, or certificate program at Conestoga College.
  • Maintain a full-time course load. Part-time studies may be allowed for students registered with Accessibility Services who require a reduced load.
  • For Spring term positions (May to August), students must be returning to full-time studies in the Fall term to be eligible.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number.

International students must also:

  • Hold a valid Canadian study permit that allows on-campus employment; adhere to all requirements stated on their study permit and Canadian student visa requirements.
