Position: Legal Assistant – Criminal Defence

About Us:

At 10(b) Criminal Law Center, we are building a platform to provide proactive, fast, and transparent legal defence. We are deeply rooted in the community and committed to upholding our clients’ rights — especially when it matters most. We specialize in quick bail processing, early resolution strategies, and strong trial defence. Grounded in transparency, community connection, and strategic advocacy, we’re building a practice where clients feel supported from day one.

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support our criminal defence practice. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is passionate about justice, and can juggle multiple priorities efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with all stages of criminal files, from intake to resolution
  • Draft, edit, and file legal documents (e.g., Designations, Applications, Bail Plans, Retainers, etc.)
  • Communicate professionally with clients, courts, Crown offices, and other stakeholders
  • Schedule court appearances, client meetings, and maintain the firm calendar
  • Prepare materials for court including bail hearings, pre-trials, and sentencing
  • Assist with legal aid billing and tracking deadlines
  • Support client onboarding, including gathering surety documents and disclosure follow-up
  • Help develop and manage digital workflows for faster bail release and efficient file handling
Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a criminal defence or legal office setting preferred
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PDF editing tools
  • Experience using Clio is required
  • Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario processes is required
  • Ability to work under pressure and with discretion
  • Bilingualism is an asset but not required
