Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Geological Engineering, or Mining Technician background is required.
  • Eligibility for registration with PEO or another engineering association once experience requirements are met is a plus.
  • Experience working outdoors, including remote locations in Northern Ontario and Quebec, is preferred.

The Opportunity

As a Junior Rock Mechanics Consultant, you’ll dive into impactful field and office work that supports the safe operation, rehabilitation, and long‑term stability of mine sites across Ontario and Quebec. Your work will directly support communities, protect the environment, and strengthen critical infrastructure.

Your Impact
  • Complete field working that includes some of the following tasks (60% to 80% of the role) at operating and abandoned mine sites:
    • Geotechnical logging core and mapping rock.
    • Supervise drilling and earthworks contractors during onsite investigations to ensure safe and effective project execution.
    • Supervise, monitor and support mine site rehabilitation activities, including backfilling operations, concrete caps, fencing, earthworks, and bat gate installation.
    • Solve problems in real‑time while in the field, escalating or collaborating with senior team members as required to safely advance project scope.
    • Use specialized equipment such as cavity scanners, sonar units, drones, and survey tools to collect accurate field data.
  • Complete office support tasks (20 to 40% of the role) that include:
    • Compile, analyze, and interpret data using Excel, Word, AutoCAD, and other tools to support designs, stability assessments, rock mass characterization, and rehabilitation options.
    • Assist in creating reports, proposals, and technical deliverables that guide project planning and implementation.
    • Prepare for field campaigns by assembling equipment, developing health & safety plans, coordinating utility locates, and organizing subcontractors.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in the field and office to support multiple active projects.
  • Contribute to WSP’s commitment to safe, sustainable development by conducting work in remote outdoor environments and promoting strong health & safety practices.
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • A bachelor’s degree in mining engineering (geotechnical/rock mechanics focus), Geological Engineering, or a Mining Technician/Technologist background.
  • For those with Engineering Degrees, eligibility for registration with PEO or another engineering association once experience requirements are met.
  • A detail‑oriented mindset with strong ownership of your work and technical outputs.
  • The ability to think critically and make sound decisions in dynamic field environments.
  • Experience working outdoors, ideally including remote locations in northern Ontario and Quebec.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license; off‑road driving experience is an asset.
  • The physical ability to lift and transport field equipment (minimum 15kg).
  • Willingness to travel for field rotations and project assignments.
  • Residency in, or willingness to relocate to, Sudbury or Timmins.

Compensation
  • AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $73,400 – $97,200
  • MB & ON: $67,000 – $92,200
  • NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC: $66,300 – $88,000
