The Opportunity

McElhanney has a new opportunity for a Materials Testing Technician to join our growing team in Courtenay, BC. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on both field and laboratory material testing projects and will work closely with our Civil and Structural Engineering teams to deliver construction quality control and quality assurance services.

McElhanney’s in-house materials testing laboratories deliver prompt, locally focused materials testing services throughout BC and AB. Complementing our local laboratories, our fleet of mobile laboratories enables our qualified technicians to provide on-site services, even in remote areas. We offer our services for: construction aggregate testing, soil, grout and concrete testing, and hot mix asphalt testing. There may be opportunities for remote camp-based shift work with our natural resources team. This role is designated as a safety sensitive position, and completion of a pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing is required.

What You’ll Do

  • Work as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers, technicians, surveyors, and drafters to provide excellent service to our clients
  • Conduct laboratory soil testing including wash sieve analysis, modified and standard proctors
  • Conduct laboratory concrete testing including compressive strength of concrete cylinders
  • Conduct laboratory asphalt testing, Marshall properties
  • Conduct field testing of concrete (slump, air content, cast cylinders)
  • Conduct field testing of grout (flow, viscosity, bleeding, cast cubes)
  • Conduct field compaction testing using a nuclear densometer
  • Timely preparation of reports
  • Other duties as required

What You’ll Bring

  • Civil construction experience is an asset but not required
  • Construction inspection and/or survey experience is an asset
  • A diploma in Engineering Technology is an asset, but not required
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, willingness to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain, able to work in wildlife populated areas and remote areas when needed
  • Good attitude and willingness to work cooperatively as a team player
  • Good initiative and accountability in the workplace
  • Strong communication skills and leadership capabilities
  • Ability to travel to remote sites and work away from home for extended periods
  • Valid (or in progress) Class 5 driver’s license

What Can We Offer You?

This hourly wage position represents an equivalent salary range of $55,000 to $65,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation commensurate with education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
