Work environment

CAS supports access to justice nationwide and coordinates among four courts: Federal Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Court Martial Appeal Court and Tax Court of Canada. The Act describes the general purposes of the Courts Administration Service: to facilitate coordination among the four courts for effective and efficient administrative services; to enhance judicial independence by placing administrative services at arm's length from government; and to enhance accountability for use of public funds while safeguarding judicial independence.

Intent of the process

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be created to staff similar positions with various tenure, linguistic profiles and security requirements within the Courts Administration Service. Candidates may be evaluated further for specific opportunities based on qualifications and operational requirements, whether or not listed on the advertisement. Essential qualifications

Education: Successful completion of a post-secondary program, certificate, or diploma relevant to the position, such as paralegal studies or legal studies, or an acceptable combination of education, training, or experience relevant to the position. If educated outside Canada, certificates/diplomas must be assessed against Canadian standards.

Experience: Experience working in a judicial or quasi-judicial or legal environment.

Definitions: Post-secondary education means years of education after high school. Acceptable combination of education or experience means a minimum of high school graduation plus two years of work experience in a judicial, quasi-judicial or legal environment. Judicial or quasi-judicial environment means a Federal Board, Commission, Tribunal or Court (Federal, Provincial or Municipal).

If you possess any of the following, please explain how you meet them (other qualifications):

  • Experience as a judicial or legal assistant or legal secretary.
  • Experience in preparing documents (typing, formatting, editing; identifying and collecting relevant details).
  • Experience transcribing information from voice recordings, handwritten notes, electronic legal text transmissions or digital audio recordings.
  • Experience working for several members of the judiciary or lawyers at once.
  • Experience in scheduling travel and accommodation arrangements, including itineraries and agendas.
  • Experience working at Courts Administration Service.
  • Operational requirements: willing and able to work overtime on short notice.

Language requirements: Various language requirements may apply; bilingual imperative statuses may be applicable (e.g., BBB/BBB, CBB/CBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, CCB/CCB; English or French essential). Note: the majority of positions may be bilingual imperative.

Abilities: Ability to edit and proofread legal documents; plan, prioritize and meet deadlines; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
