Job Overview
The Underwriter National Programs plays a critical role in the profitable growth and management of national program portfolios. This position involves advanced risk analysis strategic collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and execution of underwriting strategies aligned with departmental goals. The role supports key performance targets including claims ratio premium growth and broker engagement while contributing to a high-performing team-based culture.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and underwrite complex commercial risks within assigned national programs ensuring alignment with corporate underwriting guidelines and profitability targets.
- Prepare and deliver monthly insights reports for assigned programs identifying trends performance metrics and opportunities for improvement to support strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with Program Specialists Actuarial Prevention & Risk Services and Reinsurance to develop and execute renewal and new business strategies.
- Lead the preparation and review of CASE documents for new and renewal business including pricing wording and reinsurance considerations.
- Manage inspection processes : order surveys review recommendations and implement action plans for below-average and underinsured risks.
- Monitor and act on claims activity by completing 30-day loss reports recommending underwriting actions as needed.
- Review broker referrals within 48 hours making decisions within authority or escalating with recommendations.
- Oversee bordereau management : ensure timely receipt review for compliance and coordinate accurate data entry with Management Underwriting Assistants and Business Operations Support teams.
- Foster strong broker relationships through timely communication regular touchpoints and in-office visits supporting mutual business objectives.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives aimed at improving employee engagement collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Mentor and support more junior team members including junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of Property & Casualty industry experience with a focus on commercial lines underwriting.
Education
- Post-secondary education in business or a related field.
- Completion or active pursuit of a recognized Property & Casualty industry designation (e.g. CIP FCIP).
Technical Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and underwriting systems (e.g. PC Rating Tools).
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to justify underwriting actions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
