Overview

Job ID #31403: Labourer / Truck Driver Maintenance - OIT (two vacancies). Union: CUPE Local 5167. Job Description ID #: 886. Duration: Two (2) vacancies; Full-Time Permanent and Full-Time Temporary (for up to 18 months due to a backfill). Summary of Duties

Under the general supervision of the Water Distribution Supervisor, performs labouring duties in the repair and installation of water distribution system infrastructure and drives service vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Water Distribution Operator in the installation and repair of watermains, water services, fire hydrants, valve chambers and other sewer and water systems.
  • Break pavement and sidewalks; hand dig and backfill.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as trucks, dump trucks, loaders, air compressors, pavement breakers, pipe cutting saws, clay spades, compactors, pumps and generators and other implements associated with water distribution system repairs.
  • Assist in the operation of boring, gophers, rodding and tapping machines.
  • Notify public, businesses and contractors of water flushing and shutdowns.
  • Drive vehicles; load and unload tools, materials and equipment.
  • Assist in the installation of trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and trench timber shoring.
  • Restore job site by replacing sod, soil, asphalt and concrete.
  • Set up signs and cones for traffic control.
  • Inspect valve chambers and report irregularities.
  • Liaise with public and businesses when performing smoke and dye tests.
  • Assist Water Distribution Operator in assembling new fire hydrants and overhauling used hydrants in shop.
  • Assist Water Distribution Operator in locating and inspecting water system infrastructure, valve repair and servicing, and operating valves.
  • Assist Hydro Excavator Operator in vacuum excavation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Work in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and City policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.
Qualifications
  1. Previous experience related to duties listed above normally acquired by a combination of education and related work experience.
  2. Must possess a Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent at time of application.
  3. Must hold a current valid Operator-in-Training certificate by examination in Water Distribution (grade 12 requirement) or must achieve a current valid Operator-in-Training certificate by examination in Water Distribution within six (6) months of starting in the position.
  4. Previous experience operating trucks and heavy equipment.
  5. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  6. Ability to operate tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  7. Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including WHMIS.
  8. Must be able to follow written instructions in performing a variety of tasks such as operating vehicles or assisting on trade or craft type work. Must be able to use simple arithmetic and complete reports or logs.
  9. Must possess a Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence and a point-free driving record and/or a record found to be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.

Additional notes

  • Must be able to kneel, stoop, climb and lift while assisting in the repair and maintenance of City infrastructure.
  • Must be able to work in all outdoor environments.
