Job Description
To work with the Housekeeper in supporting the Hamilton Booth Centre in achieving its vision of Housing, Outcomes, Mission, and Excellence by providing outstanding, client centered service in ways that are aligned with The Salvation Army’s core values and Housing First.
The role of the Housekeeper is to perform cleaning, of the Hamilton Booth Centre to provide a safe and healthy environment for clients and staff. This position requires non‑judgemental attitudes towards our shelter users. The ideal candidate will show a level of high resilience related to potential confrontation, contact with drug paraphernalia and potentially hazardous situations.

Rate of pay: $17.60 per hour
Hours of work: Saturday 10P-6A, Sunday 10P-6A, Stat Holidays 10P-6A

Service Responsibilities
- Maintain exterior grounds by ensuring all debris and snow is removed from the front and back entrances and walkway (sweep, wash off shovel, salt) if assigned.
- Perform discharges; change linens, pack belongings, sanitize.
- Remove garbage and recycling from building.
- Ensure that all bathrooms are clean and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Ensure that the dining room floor and walls are clean by sweeping and mopping the floor and washing down the walls as required.
- Sweeping and mopping all hallways as scheduled and washing the walls as required.
- Sweeping and mopping all stairs and the ramp as scheduled.
- Cleaning the elevator floor and walls.
- Sanitize high touch surfaces as scheduled.
- Sweeping and mopping the floors in the TV Rooms.
- Cleaning office floors, walls and furniture as scheduled.
- Cleaning windows and doors as required.
- Cleaning spills, leaks, etc. as they occur.
- Wash linens.
- Handle cleaning supplies per WHMIS guidelines.
- Be courteous to residents, treating them with dignity and respect.
- Other housekeeping responsibilities as assigned.
- Assist in emergency response as required.
Organizational Responsibilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Centre’s Policies and Procedure manual.
- Meet with the Facilities Manager for supervision as scheduled.
- Model appropriate qualities for this position i.e., self‑motivation, punctuality, and personal hygiene.
- Attend staff meetings, workshops and conferences as authorized by the centre.
- Respect the moral and religious component of The Salvation Army.
- Represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner.
Critical Relationship Management
Internal
- Work with program staff to support building functioning.
- Works as part of the Facilities Team.
External
Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility
- This position reports directly to the Facilities Manager.
Working Conditions
- Working environment is in the shelter locations in generally agreeable conditions.
- The hours of work are: Monday to Friday 10 PM-6 AM.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping and sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- The incumbent is required to lift up to 40 pounds.
Concentration Required
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals, and using non‑motorized/general cleaning equipment.
Working Environment
The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and surrounding property designated. The Incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Handle garbage.
- Isolation and monotony.
- Odours.
- Dealing with angry people, verbal abuse.
- Exposure to toxic chemicals.
- Various Weather conditions.
- Washrooms (i.e., human waste).
Exposure to Hazards
- Physical attacks by others.
- Exposure to infectious diseases.
- Exposure to toxic chemicals.
- Moving Objects.
- Sharp Objects (needle pricks).
- Electrical Hazards.
- Repetitive strain injuries (e.g., back, wrist).
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
- Adhere to the agency’s Health and Safety Program.
- Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner.
- Conduct facility security/safety rounds on a regular basis according to policy.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies of the agency.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
- More than three months but less than one-year, prior related experience, including life skills, and general familiarity with cleaning procedures.
- An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
- A police reference check for the vulnerable sector, not older than 6 months, deemed satisfactory by The Salvation Army.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $17.60 with a maximum of $17.60. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
